Here's my situation:

Hired about a year ago as a computer technician at my company. A help desk girl was hired on a month later after me. Due to some circumstances I fill in the role as network administrator and eventually become the main network admin. They later hire another network admin (there are two of us now).

Salary progression of each person
Me: Started out X dollars for field tech. When moved onto full-time network admin (about 8 months ago), I practically have to beg and get a 5% raise and this is my current salary.

Helpdesk girl: Started out about $3k less than what I started out as for being helpdesk. Got promoted to field tech after about 6 months and started making what I started out at. About two months ago she somehow miraculously received a 5% raise herself and now makes what I make (she is still a field tech and I am a network admin).

Second network admin: Began about 4-5 months ago and started out about 8k more than what I currently am making. We are doing the same job, but I started out with no experience and he came in with about 5 years experience.

So now being a network admin and working with my partner I have learned a lot of new things and have been involved in many large projects. I am recognized as one of the best workers in our department, but my boss's boss isn't good about giving out raises.

My year review is this month and I was thinking about making the comment about how much I make compared to these other two people and how I should be closer to what the second guy makes since I have gained a lot of experience now and should definitely make more than the field tech. Bad move?

Cliffs!
- Field tech currently makes as much as I do (network admin)
- Company hired second network admin after a few months that I was in the position, who has more experience, for a lot more money
- I want to say something about the large money differences in salaries, but not sure how it would go over.

Never use someone else's salary as leverage. It is suicide.

Put yourself in your boss's shoe and ask yourself "Why does cpals deserve a raise?"

Write it down and talk to your bosss about it.

Isn't it funny how people expect to be paid more for experience acquired while working at a company? They pay you to acquire that experience, and then they have to pay you more because of it. :D

Seriously though, don't talk to your co-workers about salaries.

Listen to this guy. ESPecially 5 yrs. vs 0 experience.

If anything, you should only compare to "the market" which in your case as a network admin are dime a dozen.

1. I never asked about their salaries. The field tech and I are both at the base pay level for our title (they only have two titles for the whole dept) and my boss told me how much the new guy was going to make.

2. I agree that thinking about bringing up other people's salaries is a bad idea. I have enough accomplishments and other things going towards me that I can make this work.

3. If I compared my salary to the market, I would be severely underpaid. There was a job opening at a similar type of entry level job in the city next to me for about 15k more, but right now I like where I work and have made some good friends. It would just be nice to get paid more for doing a crapload of work.
