People do not go into Baltimore for vacation. People go to Baltimore to score meth and then flee as quickly as possible.

The Smithsonian (specifically the Air & Space portion) was awesome. Lots of history in there if you're into that sort of thing. Also, parking is all over the place and free if I remember correctly.

Consider a bus tour in the evening. Seeing the monuments at night is a nice plus.

Most have tour guides that are either funny, informative, or both. And most have stops where you can get out and walk around.

DC subway system is nice and not overly confusing.

Arlington National Cemetery is a must in my opinion. So eerie yet so powerful.

I can honestly say to avoid the National Aquarium at the Inner Harbor as it's overpriced suck.

Big fan of the Serial Podcast? You can tour of all the sites including Leakin Park. Its all just west of Baltimore.

To go to DC from Baltimore I would probably take the MARC train to DC. http://mta.maryland.gov/marc-train
You can also try Amtrack if you are closer to Penn Station http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=am/am2Station/Station_Page&code=BAL

Traffic in the DC-MD-VA area is the worst in the country, yes even worse than LA.

since you'll be in Baltimore to start with, def check out the Baltimore National Aquarium ... one of the best Aquariums in the US IMHO and is well worth it (despite what the other poster said). shop around for tickets, you can find them for cheap

after that you can either take a MARC train to DC, or rent a car and drive... plan on getting to DC early and staying all day, and check out all the museums that surround the mall. if possible, I would even try to stay in DC one night, so you have ample time to checkout all the museums (if you have to pick and choose, National History and National Air and Space are the two you cannot miss)

They have a cool science museum in Inner Harbor. Go check that out while you're at the aquarium.

If you are just sight seeing or killing time, then Inner Harbor (includes the National Aquarium) is good to go and people watch. If you want to go bar hopping, check out Fels Point or Light Street. There is some good museums too (nothing close to DC) if you want some quiet. If you have a rental, park in Little Italy as it is a close walk with no fees. You don't want to miss D.C. but take public transportation- if you can get to a metro, you are home free (nearest being greenbelt).

From Thursday to Sunday in 2 weeks

If you haven't already completed your Christmas shopping, you could stop by the National Cryptologic Museum and pick up this year's NSA Christmas ornament.

The NCM collection contains thousands of artifacts, including numerous working World War II German Enigma machines (2 of them are available for visitors to try out), and a Navy Bombe used to break it. Displays discuss the history of American cryptology and the people, machines, techniques, and locations concerned. Initially housing NSA artifacts for viewing by employees, the museum quickly developed into a collection of U.S. cryptologic history, with some artifacts dating back to pre-American Revolutionary War times.

In addition to exhibits covering equipment used to encrypt, decrypt, and secure information, the museum features exhibits on the people who contributed to cryptography in America, such as George Washington (who integrated military intelligence tactics, including coded messaging, into the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War), the Native American code talkers (who protected U.S. communications during both World Wars by using their native languages to encode message traffic), and the Navy WAVES (who, like the WRENS of the British Royal Navy, operated the Bombe to decrypt German military traffic during WWII).
Not a place that everyone would enjoy, but for those interested it can be fascinating...

Honestly my 5 y.o. daughter was bored with National Aquarium in well under an hour. This is in direct comparison to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and Monterery Aquarium in California where we had to pry her away. As always it's a YMMV situation and tastes vary.

yes there is a Metro but not sure where it ends in relation to Baltimore. I would take the metro otherwise you will spend all your time driving around D.C. looking for a place to park

Is this the same as Marc train? How much and how many hours is the trip? Are the attraction in DC walking distance?

Amtrak and MARC both have rail service from Baltimore to DC, generally costs $10-15 each way, a bit less for MARC maybe. (I dont take MARC regularly).

Once you're in DC itself the DC metro can be used to get around the city. There is plenty to do downtown if you are interested in the museum type Smithsonian stuff, lots of restaurants as well, though everything will be fairly expensive in the city.

Baltimore itself has SOME sightseeing (inner harbor and aquarium + a few historical sites) but overall is not a particulary attractive city, nor fun to visit.
