Two of my friends, my girlfriend, and I are going to Austin for spring break (March 3rd to the 9th). None of us have ever been anywhere in Texas before, so I was hoping some of you could give us some suggestions on what to see, where to go, where to eat, and where to drink. Austin is one of the places that we're considering moving after graduation, so we'd like to really get a good idea of what it's got to offer. We're staying in a crappy Super 8 about a mile and a half north of the UT campus and we're going to try to walk a lot, take the bus, and sometimes take taxis if we can help it (renting a car is pretty expensive for < 25), but we could rent a car for a couple days. You will probably want to rent a car for part of your trip, take a drive around the hill country and go out to lake travis maybe hit carlos and charlies. Also go down here http://www.saltlickbbq.com/ If it is weekend and nice weather make sure you get there at least an hour before you plan to eat ...and BYOB
edit: and staying near UT you will be within walking distance of hundreds of bars and pretty much nobody has a cover

We were originally planning to pretty much just go to 6th St, but we figured we should branch out..a little bit. Do you have any recommendations for which places to definitely hit on or around 6th st?

Drafthouse is awesome and the crowd always makes it even better, Hula Hut has a wonderful atmosphere and view but the food is not "great". People seem to love the Mexican Martinis at Trudy's. A great 24 hr eatery is Kerbey Lane.

The mex martini's at Trudy's are pretty good... but the best fajita's in town are at Manuel's imo.
Another good 24 hour eatery is Starseeds
Mt. Bonnell is only a 20 minute trip, easy to fit in.

:thumbsdown: on Kerbey Lane, that place was going downhill before I left Austin.
Food wasn't as good and the service was downright awful.
For a much better place try Magnolia Cafe
Trudy's isn't bad though but can be quite crowded.

true that with kerbey lane. started going downhill when they opened the drag location. come to think of it, the drag has gone downhill a lot too.
as for trudy's, if in austin and you want to get really wasted, the thing to do is the texas grand slam. you go to trudy's texas star just north of campus and drink two mexican martinis. they only let you have two. then you go to the north one and do the same. then you go to the south one and do the same.
starseeds is great, but be sure to follow the rules or they will kick you out.

Where is the Super 8? 1.5 miles north of UT campus could mean anything. if it's by the highway, or even worse, on the other side, it doesn't help you at all.
It is by the highway (on the west side of 35). It was by far the least expensive hotel/motel, and we figure we won't be there very much. There is a bus stop about a half mile away and we figure we can take cabs back at night. Am I wrong in thinking that?
If it's the Motel 8 by Hwy 290, that is going to be a long bus ride. In any case, you should try the restaurant Pho if you've never had pho.
That one isn't on Google maps (NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!). Sounds like a good location. Check out some neighborhood shops close by. You'll be close to this area:
