Per month? Watts = Joules / Second 4200W / month or /year is the same amount of energy.

I assume you mean just 4200W?

Edit: I'm sure that thing can't produce 4.2MW of power ;)

I figured he meant 4200 kwh

Err typo, should be 4200kwh Power is typically billed in killawatt hours. This system will 4200kwh monthly or 50400kwh per year.

Will SDG&E allow a reverse feed from your system into the grid?

Yes. We don't have batteries, we are grid connected. We use the grid during the day as our 'battery' when we are overproducing and then use the grid at night when we aren't generating. We are billed on the net difference (but right now we should be overgenerating for our usage, once the pool is in if I did this right we should be pretty close to even on a year to year basis)

Nice solar panels btw. One of my co-works has it installed on the roof of her house.

Added some photos of the garage equipment (inverters, shutoffs, etc). Only thing missing is the data collector with the inverters talk to. Its a stand alone web server which collects data from each inverter and rolls it together into statistics. If I can open it up safely for external access I will (it gets installed on Friday).

nice that you actually went through getting it, but it takes up too much real estate, someone needs to invent or standardize a way to make those as roof tiles or something.

So

4200kwh / month = 4200000wh/mo = 5.833kW power = 7.83Hp.

Nice 8 horsepower motor you've got filling your backyard ;)

And in the winter, what, 2? :p

Had it been me, I might have included an AGM battery bank too for good measure.

There are companies that do. Another firm just claimed about 100% increase in production per sf (those panels do 180watts, they claim they will commercialize ones in the same form factor that do 360watts). As they do it will make roof options even more relevant.

As for space, we are on 16 acres here in San Diego, so I didnt' mind too much ;)

Thought about it, but decided just getting a propane generator for prolonged outages would be much cheaper and less overall maintence costs. Not in yet, still working on that project.

Is there a layer of glass or something on top of the solar panels to protect them? Like, say for example one of your disgruntled neighbors "accidentally" throws a rock at the panels...

While this is ATOT, I typcially don't keep disgruntled neighbors ;) Besides, they would be trespassing pretty far to get close enough to do that. If thet get past Clint and Nikita (our K9s) more power to em ;)

Great setup! Do you have plans to diversify with geothermal etc. or is this mainly to offset power? You mentioned a well, which is perfect for an open loop geothermal system.

Seriously, is there anything protecting the panels if something were to accidentally fall on them?

Nice. Kudos for going green. Don't forget to recycle and grow your own organic vegetable garden :D
