Going skiing with the GF...

My girlfriend is an awesome skiier (she was an instructor for a while) and this winter I am spending over a week skiing in north Idaho with her. I did it last year as well and it was a blast. I was using her brother's old gear most of the time, except for the skis and boots which I rented. Some of the stuff was kind of worn out, so I figured this year I would get some of my own gear.

I don't want to get skis or boots yet, just some of the peripheral items. I was looking at goggles, and will probably get some gloves and maybe even some snow pants. I have a decent EMS jacket that did the job fine last year.

Basically I am looking for some recommendations on brands to look out for. I've spent the most time checking out goggles, and found that Spy Optic (Spy Optic and Review) had the highest rated model. The orbit looks cool but is expensive, but I think that comes with the territory. Gloves I haven't really searched for yet. Pants I quickly looked at and saw prices from $130 to $500 (Store), which is a big range. Is there anything specific to look for, and is there a big difference between the expensive model and cheaper ones?

You will want to make absolutely sure that the pants you get are waterproof. If you are like me the first time I went out on the slops for some snowboarding, you will spend A LOT of time on your ass recovering from falling. My pants were not completely waterproof so I had some wet underwear by the end of the day. Not too comfortable.

For goggles, you will want something that has some UV protection, and something that has a nice tint. If you are out on the slopes and it's sunny out, it might be hard to see with the sun reflecting off of the snow.

Goggles go with Oakley

I personally have these with a High intensity Yellow lens for night and a Blue iridium lens for day. Even when everyone else's lenses are fogged to hell mine always seem to be clear. You can get these on ebay new for around 80 dollars with a decent lens, extra lens is around $70 and you can find them wherever online.

As far as pants I am a snowboarder and I have some lowend burton pants for an outer layer($90-150), under that I have some tight cotton long underwear and some flannel PJ bottoms. If its cold I will exchange the PJ bottoms for sweats.

Goggles: Oakley's for skiing, Spy's for snowboarding. Snowpants: Ripzone for a good price. Gloves: Salomon. Also don't drop your poles when your going up the lift; you get spat on a lot.

There is no difference in goggle technology for snowboards vs skis. I use Oakleys and I ride a burton, so does the friend who recommended them.

I posted on some skiing forums about this a while back, and got some recommendations for the Oakley A-frames, as well as Spy and Scott brands. Spy vs. Oakley seems to all depend on who you ask, lots of people like both; I'm going with Spy because they're so much cheaper, I'll probably end up with the Soldiers. One thing to consider is that the goggles should have double lenses, which pretty much anything from the mentioned companies have. Lens color is also important: Last season I was as good as blind with smoked lenses when the light went flat. I'm going with yellow lenses this time.

As far as snow pants go, I was very happy with the Schoffel Gore-tex ones I picked up off eBay for $35. eBay is really a great place to buy used ski gear. I'm happy with about any quality pants that keep me dry (Gore-tex or equivalent) and don't care about brand name, so $100 can keep me happy for pants + goggles.

I don't mean to be rude....but why don't you ask her? I would think that she would be the best judge. Not only does she probably know the stuff from a gear standpoint (having been an instructor), but she also knows you better than anyone here so she knows what you will best need.

Like, for instance, Thin, or Ultra-Thin.
