I'm gonna be travelling overseas for a couple of weeks. I was wondering what do I need to do in order to drive there (legally). Right now I have NY state driving license. Do I need to get some sort of internation driving license, if so then how?

Depends where you're going. Where are you going anyway?

I know in the Philippines you can use your US license for up to 30days.

I believe you need an international license. I'm fairly sure you do if you have a canadian license and can & US licenses are basically the same.

I'm not sure how to go about getting an international driver's license and I also don't know what your plans are, but I was in Europe for 3months in 2000 and I never needed to drive anywhere.

Contact your local AAA office. You don't have to be a member and that is the only place you can get an international license....... well legally anyway :).

As the others pointed out, go to the AAA and apply for an International Drivers Permit (it's not a license). It doesn't replace your existing license. It's just a supplemental document that sort of translates your license into other languages. Beware of third party scams

Get a AAA int'l drivers license.

The best thing about it is the police overseas really don't know what to do with it. If you get pulled over for something, they'll usually be befuddled and let you go! I know I have ;)

I didn't find anything on int'l driving license on AAA website. I guess I'll have to call them or something. How much time does it usually take to get one?

You shouldn't need one... they are good if you are going to countries really out of the way that driving laws are very different, but Europe you will be fine, mot of Europe drives on the right hand side of the road anyways, just the speeds are in KM. But try looking on lonelyplanet.com for the countries information & more weblinks.

LOL, that's at least sometimes true. Back when, my mere posession of one is what I believe got me out of a more serous beef that didn't even involve driving. I guess the gendarmes figured I couldn't be that much of a vagrant with one, LOL!

I'm in the military and have done a lot of world traveling as a result. Everywhere I've been my American license is all I've ever needed to drive, rent a car, etc. I've not been assigned anywhere where they drive on the opposite side if the road so I can't say if this applies everywhere. However based on my experience, I would tend to believe your stateside license should get you by no problem.

it depend on what place u go, better get an international license. When u get a car, sit at the driver side at the front, adjust all mirror and seats that suit u! Then place in ur key and ignite the car until the engine start.Shift ur stick to 1st gear and it'll move ,then change gear after the rpm reach at least 4k!Remember to turn on the lights when u drive at night!!

I hope you can drive a manual because in Europe, especially if you will be renting a car, you will find it difficult to get an auto.

You don't need to get an International Driver's license to drive in Europe, although I suppose it couldn't hurt to get one (I think they're like $10 or $15). I was able to rent cars in both Rome and Paris with my Mass. license. Btw, if you do drive in Rome, watch out for those scooters...they'll be the death of you. And if you want an exciting driving challenge, try driving along the Amalfi coast in southern Italy. ;)

the first rule of thumb for driving overseas is to always blow your horn. you will fit right in then. just honk, honk, honk. they will think you're one of them.

They'll probably think you are a NYC cabdriver.

my Mom lives in LA, and whenever she gets pulled over, she says in a heavy, fake French accent, "Wheech way eees Disneeeeeeeyland?" It never fails! :D
