going home for the break - leave my crunchers on?

Aight, I go to RIT, and I am leaving tomorrow for my thanksgiving break, I'll be away for like 1.5 weeks. I'm going to shut most of my stuff down, mainly accessories, and you know, the fridge and all but I don't know if I want to disconnect my server and desktop. They are crunching 24x7 and would do very well leaving them on. I am going to disconnect the network, but I have setiqueue running and I would just have one massive dump when I come back and connect up again. Need some input on whether to leave them on or off... I have to take the router out of the line and hide it along with my wap and all (against school policy), but other than that what do you think? Considering anything bad happening (the odds) or something?

Well, here's a couple of things to consider/check:

Are all your heatsinks securely attached, are all the fans running fine, no funny noises starting to come from them?

Do you have some sort of monitor/shutdown procedure if the temperature gets too hot? (Hint, try Motherboard Monitor, and some of the Addons listed there)

Will they be coming into your room (cleaning etc), and will they object to having computers left on 24/7 unattended?

Just a couple of things i thought i'd throw in for thought I would go for yes, i've left my computers on for a week while everyone was away, came back and they were totally fine

and a big question is can you afford to replace them if someone decides they should have them more than you.

there are some in this world that won't mind finding "free" stuff and i doubt that the school would replace them if "removed" without authorization.

The big thing is they come in to make sure we are not breaking any rules with having things here. I had to take my fall out shelter sign off of the wall and hide it and I have to take certain things home. I have to put the router away also. I don't think they will object to a 2u rackmount server with a big ass desktop being on while I am not here as they are not liable if something happens to it.

Having anything plugged into a wall outlet and unattended is a fire hazzard. My advice is shut them off and unplug everything. You wouldn't want a fire to be traced back to you. Do what I did take them home with you.

How are you getting away with running a router if it's against school policy? I'm going away to college next year and we want to use a router in our room, but it's against the school's policy. Is there a certain way to do it or are you just getting lucky?

I'd leave the rigs on, if they are reliable there shouldn't be any major problems. Do they run at decent temps? Good secure heatsinks? No fan problems?

Edit: Good point baldy, you may want to just take them home with you.

I'm running a Cisco router, the 806 that was available for Netacad students. I didn't do anything special, as they don't really police the things so it doesn't matter. Just don't let them see it, as I am hiding it when they come in. I have too much equipment to bring home and no room at home to set it up so bringing it home is not an option. I am going to end up turning these things off probably, although I don't want to. It hurts me to do so. Everything here runs very cool, and has UPS's (everything including my phone has a UPS, i have about 7 ups's). Nothin is plugged right into the wall pretty much.

I wouldnt even consider turning them all off, I would just leave it all on.... Has any of your fans gone out? or anything of yours started a fire while you WERE there? so why would it happen then you aren't.... I leave my computers on 24/7 and have never had a problem

When I went to ISU, you had to take them home. No exceptions.

How long of break are you going to be on?

I have a thankgiving break coming up and I am going to kill everything in the room. Like baldy said I don't wanna be the cuase of a fire!

I run a router here and as far as I know its ok.

Now for christmas break I think I will take a few home. But to take them all home would be to much! My little firebird can only hold so many computer.

I am now off til the 1st of next month. I left all there and just brought my laptop home which is what I plan to do for the holiday break too.

When I was in college we didn't have to take everything home but we had to unplug all cords from outlets even if it was as simple as a fan or light that wasn't turned on. Any plug can cause a short in the wall outlet.
