Going from xp to win 8 - Gaming question

Hey,

I have a desktop pc for gaming with xp installed (Intel core i3 530, hd4870, 4 gb ram). Since I can't play games like BF3 and far cry 3 on xp, I'm thinking about moving to windows 8.

Considering my specs, would you think it would be wise to upgrade? I don't want to compromise the performance of other or older games such as COD MW3, black ops, mass effect 3 etc. Or would it be better to go for win 7?

I'm kind of confused after reading alot about performance differences (and being CPU bottlenecked for example).

Thanks alot! 🙂

I am interested in finding out this too because my performance going from windows xp to windows 7 was usually worse with older games.

What do you hope to gain from upgrading? If the store apps interest you, you're interested in enhanced security, or you're worried about Windows XP losing support in 2014, upgrading to either 7 or 8 might be worthwhile. Otherwise, stick with what you have (for now).

As far as 7 versus 8, the difference is a marginal victory towards 8. Another thing 8 has going for it is price, currently.

What I hope to gain is perhaps better graphics due to dx 11, but most importantly, the fact that I will be able to play the newer games such as Far Cry 3 and BF3, without compromising performance of older games.

Since win8 is cheaper than win 7, I'm hoping to achieve this with win 8.

I'd say the older DX9 games will work fine in Windows 8 or Windows 7. There isn't that much overhead compared to XP so i'd say you would be fine.

Moving up to Windows 8 or 7 would also increase the security of your system and most likely the speed as well. I'd say it's a win/win situation. Worst case, take an image of your system now with some cloning software and then see how you like Windows 7/8. If it's all good, keep it, if not revert back to your image.

Upgraded GPU hardware will be needed to really enjoy BF3 and FC3, but a decent GPU won't break the bank these days.
