-------Going from Win98 to W2K Pro, I think I have a problem???----------------

In a few days I will upgrade my pc o/s from Win98 to W2K Pro. I plan on doing a clean install with W2K in FAT32. I know to check the MS Website for the HCL, for Hardware compatibility with Windows 2000, and back up anything/everything of value.

Here are a few other things I have already done:

1. Downloaded the W2K SP1
2. Downloaded new W2K drivers for most of my Hardware.
3. I will soon remove my Ethernet NIC card (used to have DSL, but not now. Will keep it out for a month or two)

Here is what I have now;
-Abit BH6 MB version 1.0a
-Celeron 300 & 128MB Ram
-6.4G HD
-Sony CD-R/W model: CRX-140E
-unknown ATAPI CD-ROM Drive 56X
-a two year old Creative RivaTNT Graphics card
-2 Voodoo2 Cards that I run in SLI mode
-The original SB Live card

Can you see any problems here, that will cause the install to hang, or freeze; or at worst not even possible?? The only thing I can think of is that my processor and small HD will cause things to maybe slow down. However, what I am more worried about at this point, is that I think that my standard CD-ROM is a generic one, and I don't know if/where I will need to get any W2K drivers for it??

Are there any guides on the net I can read or print out, so I will avoid any nasty suprises? Or maybe you can see something above that will totally halt what I am trying to do? If so please let me know, thanks

Please Help Me out????

No problem with the CDROM.....IDE CDROM drivers are always generic, so that will not be an issue.

Won't the Celeron overclock? You could add a little bit of speed there. 128MB of RAM is a little light, but you'll survive. If anything, I would agree with outlamd in removing one of the Voodoo2s....the SLI configuration tends to cause problems.

Other than that, you'll be fine.

what do you use for a burning program?? you'll need to get the latest aspi layer from adaptec, if you use adaptec, if you use any aspi layer thats old in windows 2k, then restart, you will be messed up, i did, and it was a pain to recover, lemme serch thru my archives. i Have a link to a program that'll install the latest greatest aspi layer.

the aspi is definitly worth worrying about, renedered my install nearly useless, heres the aspi layer thing: godsent run the program after installing adaptec, or an iso burning program BUT BEFORE RESTARTING!!!!!

Yep, I will leave out the Ethernet card and BOTH of the Voodoo2 cards. I don't really use them anymore, and its better to be safe than sorry.

As for the Celeron, I did overclock it and for about 18 months it ran at 450Mhz w/o any problems. But then last summer, my system started locking up about 20 minutes after I turned my PC on, and this would happen about 70% of the time. Once I install the O/S, and after a few days pass and everything is OK, what I could try is to 'clean out the case.' And by this I mean to make sure that nothing is blocking the air flow across the MB, no dust anywhere. More importantly, maybe I should remove the HS/Fan combo on top of the CPU, and remove the dried out silicone thermal grease and paste some new stuff on. I think if I do all of this, maybe I could get the CPU to go back up to 450Mhz again?? BOTOH, I think that maybe I drove the CPU so hard for an extended period of time, and it just won't get up that high anymore??

For the CD-R/W, I use the Sony Spressa Play & Record to burn MP3's onto CD. The great benefit of this is that it converts the MP3 format into CDA, which (in theory)any CD player anywhere, can play. I can even play discs I made with MP3's, on my portable CD player! For storage, I use the Sony CD Extreme record software version 1.3.390. I just downloaded this version about 3 months ago.

Any more tips or suggestions welcome,

Thanks everyone.
