going from sdram to ddr RAM

ok...i have been running 2 128 sdram chips.... decided to upgrade to ddr. so i bought 2 256 pc2100 ddr chips.
now my motherboard (kob kt266a fdsux) from mercury. supports either sdram or ddr at any one time, but not both at same time. neway, i changed the jumpers on the board like i'm supposed to in order to install the ddr.... i install the ddr, turn on pc...i get past bios to starting windows... and get..... windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system . now i'm stumped... i have tried just one or the other 256 chip and still no good. i put the old ram back in.. set jumpers back to normal and everything starts up fine.... i'm up for suggestions?

running winxp (all updates)
amd athlon xp 1900+
256 sdram
radeon 9600

That kinda sounds like what happens sometimes when you're running at too high of a FSB...you didn't change anything else, I assume?

I suppose it's remotely possible that both RAM sticks are bad, but very unlikely.

I'm not familiar with that motherboard either, but one old motherboard I had a while back (ECS K7S5A) wouldn't need any jumpers changed to switch between SDRAM and DDR SDRAM, you'd just swap out the memory. It was a different chipset though.

Hopefully someone else will be of more help than me, lol...

Also it might help to clear the CMOS - something that should be done any time a major CPU or RAM change is made
.bh.

i'm being told it could be the quality of the ram too. i'm gonna run the memtest tomorrow and make sure the memory is good

just so you know, it appears my mobo didn't like the ram, so i just bought a new mobo and power supply. now i'm all good.
