Hi,
Do you think its worth upgrading from a P4 1.7 to a P4 2.2?
Thanks....

The architecture for a P4 really sucks at under 2ghz. My 1.6a definitely is pokey at 1.6 When I run the FSB at 133 so that it's running at 2.1 there's a night and day difference. The P4 will actually double in performance if you compare a 1.4 to a 2.8 which is very rare. I wouldn't want to be caught with a 1.7 for what I do but basically it boils down to what you do with your computer. Does it do what you need it to do right now quickly enough? If yes, then don't upgrade - wait until you need more and then get a faster chip for less. If no, you will definitely see a big speed boost!

if you are upgrading to a northwood "A" or "B" cpu - yes it is worth it.

(and thats not even factoring in overclocking potential)

I think the 2.2s only come in the 'A' format any way. You'll probably be able to overclock to arond 2.6-2.9Ghz depending on cooling/luck etc.

I'd go for it definitely but you'll need a new mobo I think?

go for it. i went from a 1.425 gHz athlon (9.5x150) which was faster than your 1.7 gHz p4, and i feel a big big difference on a lot of applications with my current system compared to the athlon.

What would happen if you put a 2.53B (533FSB) CPU on an Intel 400Mhz MoBo? It runs at 19 x133 = 2.527Ghz on a 533 board, right? Does that mean it would run at 19 x 100 = 1.9Ghz on a 400FSB board?

My buddy has a Willemette 1.8 on an Intel 845BGL board and he's thinking of upgrading. Is the above scenario an accurate representation of what would happen if he put a 2.53B on his existing board? (Yes, his current CPU is 478 pins)

that is exactly what would happen. I don't know of any boards which didn't have a bios update which allowed for northwoods so it should take one fine. If you put it in a 400mhz FSB board it will run at it's multiplier x 100 instead of 133 which doesn't hurt anything just like an athlon. However, boards like the asus p4s533 as so cheap I don't know why you would want to let all that horsepower go to waste. Or you could get said board and a 1.6a which will run on a 133 bus at 2.1ghz no problem.

I had a 1.7 chip. The fastest i could oc it was 2ghz and not so stable. I replaced it with a 1.6a and it fixed everything.
Grab one for cheap, just make sure its packed after 03/2002.
good luck
