Hi there...

I am getting fed up with the slowness and bugginess of HomeRF and I would like to upgrade to 802.11b. I have looked at the Linksys wireless access point, which is what I would get, but I need to know what wireless cards I should get for my 3 networked computers and how much they will cost -- I don't have a lot to spend...

Secondly, here is my setup:

I would like to get the access point that has the DSL router and switch built in. What I need to know is, with that router, can I forward, open and close ANY ports?

Please see my new questions at the bottom of this thread! Thanks!

Thanks! Happy Holidays!

The Wireless Solution.

Conventional Wisdom* claims that the combination Orinoco Gold (About $90) SMC Wireless Router (About $150) yield the best results.

ORiNOCO PC Card - Gold.

There are no real big differences between the entry level Routers.

Wireless Routers Compared

Does not pay to buy Access Point they cost the same as Wireless Router.

When it comes to Wireless your mileage may varied, there are too many environmental variables that are unique to each individual setting.

* Conventional Wisdom = A lot of positive BBS posting, but no numerical data.

And one more thing, with the Linksys Wireless Router/AP, all of the computers in my house with a card will be on the LAN, correct? IE: they can be used in LAN games, file sharing, print sharing, etc? Sorta like plugging them directly into a switch, I guess...?

Thanks!

And a third, new, question: I have looked at the review of the Linksys 802.11b card and most users say the range is terrible and I need good range in my home. So, I want to use the Orinoco Gold card, but I need to use these in desktop PC's, so what PCI card do I need to use the Orinoco Gold card?

Thanks!
