Going from CRT to LCD ?

Hey guys,

I'll try to make this short.

First, see my rig in my sig (for the GPU information).

Second, right now I am using a CRT monitor, the 19" LG Flatron F900B. I've had it since three years and it still serves me well as far as CRT technology goes I believe. I have only one complaint about it, is that it consumes 83W when active (I am a very concerned person when it comes to energy economy). I am a gamer more than anything else, if it matters to mention.

I don't know much about LCD's. It's pretty much the first time I am considering buying one. I never really wanted an LCD before. But energy consumption and an upcoming full system upgrade (the GPU will be bought last, once R600 is released, I will decide between it and G80 depending on my personal preferences and probably prices as well) are the two major reasons why I am interested by one. So I recently started to look for maybe two LCD's to choose from, and I came up with two models at least, which are the LG 20" L204WTX (once again maybe, I really like their products so far) and the Samsung SyncMaster 205BW.

Buying one right now would not be worth it I think since my X1800XL is a dual VGA model, and I heard and read often that if I'd want to go with a "decent" LCD monitor than I'd better stay away from the VGA interface and go with DVI (I also heard about DVI-D but I don't know much about that one, is it newer than DVI ?).

I still wonder right now though .. would it be worth it at all ? Should I stay with my CRT for maybe another year or so ? I know I will eventually go with LCD, but if right now I think these LCD choices above are the ones I would be interested in if I could leave the CRT world within the next two or three months.

Your opinions please ?

Just to clarify, DVI includes DVI-D (digital only), DVI-A (analog only, rare) and DVI-I (integrated, meaning both).

As for those two panels, I'd check the Video forum and maybe Google some reviews of each. Using VGA on an LCD will be okay, but won't be as 'perfect' digital. I've used it though and couldn't see much difference at all.
