Going from ATI 9800 Pro to nVidia 6800GT

I do this every day (and have been doing it for 20 years), so I already know what the "right" answer is, but anyway...

I'm replacing the 9800 Pro in my rig with a 6800GT. What are the chances that the install is going to go haywire without wiping the system? Eventually I'll do a full wipe, but I'd like to see how things work now.

Ummm... i've never whipped the system when swapping videocards.

In fact I had a 4200 and 8500 at one point in time and when testing each card i simply installed BOTH Nvidia and ATI drivers and ran the benchmarks without problems.

Instead, I recommend to uninstall ATI drivers then use driver cleaner and then simply install Nvidia's drivers. There is no need to reformat the hard drive when switching videocards, or any computer component for that matter (except Raid array which is not technically a single component)

All I did was throw&go. I just ran the ATi uninstaller, shutdown, installed the GT, went to Guru3D and grabbed the 61.80's and away I went. So far zero issues with any games or apps.

Bummer :( My GT went in my SN45G last night just fine, and the ACHME 200w PSU handled it nicely too. Used it to confirm the XFX ti4600 VIVO in it was the reason for display issues. XFX will get no more of my money, it's the first vid card that ever went bad on me, and that's saying alot considering how many I've deployed and used myself over the years.

R.I.F.=reading is fundamental ;) How the hell did you interpret my post to imply that? Is far more logical to deduce that I've purchased many vid cards for many computers i.e. white box builder, than to surmise it is an implication that I make and/or rebadge them.

I just upgraded from a 9800 pro to a 6800GT last night without any problems. Just made sure to uninstall all the ATI junk beforehand.

Actually, I'm a little confused about the molex. I thought the 6800 had dual-connectors. I'm only seeing one connector on the eVGA picture (the box is waiting for me at home, so I haven't gotten a chance to open it). The 6800 requires dual-connectors, doesn't it?

Nope, the GT has a single slot cooler and molex connector, but most still reach ultra speeds :D
