Thinking about upgrading from an Athlon XP 3200+ to an Athlon XP X2 4400+. Both are socket 939, MB is ASUS A8N-SLI Premium with latest BIOS, so the hardware can handle it. XP Pro is installed on the system. Will I have to reinstall XP Pro or will it just install new drivers.

Thanks in advance!

I remember reading somewhere that upgrading from a single core to dual core could require a windows reinstall, but now I can't find that reference.....hence the question I asked.

Had to reinstall a one year old install, but a two week old one had no problems. The fresher the install the less gunk :)

Just to be nitpicky, it's just A64 3200+ and A64 X2 4200+. Athlon XP is the old Socket A processor.

Should be just as simple as taking out the old processor and putting in the new one. Also, the X2 4200+ is faster then the Opteron 165 unless he overclocks. OCing the Opty 165's are pretty safe though so I say go for it.

i recently went from a single core 3700 sandy to a X2 4200 with no trouble at all. just turn computer off, pop case side off, take heatsink off and pop lever for CPU, place new CPU in socket and reverse what you just did. turn computer on and let windows see the new chip, it burps and farts for a few minutes, asks you to reboot and you are done. painless
