Thing i hate the most in the world is having the FORMAT!I will pass from this system:

AMD ATHLON 2500XP+
1024 meg of ram(2x512) Kingston pc 2700(333mhz)
160g maxtor HD 7200rpm(ide)
Asus a7n8x rev 2.0 mobo
xfx geforce 6800gt 256meg
windows xp
cd writer/dvd player liteon

and will add these new component:

AMH Athlon 64 3200 ( 2.2ghz NC 512k)
same memory
same hd
ASUS K8V-X MOBO
same graphic card
same os
same writer dvd player

Will i be able to installed the new compotenent to new mobo and be able to not format?

Just wondering

thanks

You can give it a try. The hardware abstraction layer is supposed to give you a layer of isolation between WinXP and the hardware, and it might let you make the switch without a format and reload of WinXP.

I would suggest you backup your data first, and then remove any chipset drivers (using add/remove programs from the control panel) that are installed for your current motherboard.

I dont seem to have any chipset driver installed in my control panel( only thing i dont know are🙂

-Microsoft Data Access Component KB870699
-MSXML4 Parser
-RTPatch Update
-SpeechRedist
-Windows XP Hotfix (lot of them )

everything else installed on my pc are games, programs.

hehe yeah, but i HATE format lol.I dont care about getting back stuff etc.Its just the TIME WASTED that piss me off.You lose half a day just to reinstall everything lol

Just want to confirm tho.Im going for my asus a7n8x( NFORCE), i didnt installed the drivers tho, to a VIA Mobo( K8V-X)

Everything should still be fine?

Heck, I went from a crappy SIS chipset that wouldn't boot half the time to an Nforce II without formatting. Of course, I forgot to uninstall the chipset drivers first, so it wouldn't boot like usual, but after swapping the mobos back and forth again it went great; ran clean just like a fresh install.

Ok little other question!!!

Some people tell me to get the CHAINTEK VNF3, so even if i change brand( asus to chaintek) no format will still be need huh?

Just need confirmation.thanks

just boot to the XP cd and do a repair install. I have done it many times no problems. have the drivers you need for the new hardware handy, XP will detect most of it, but you never know.

I still recommend a full format and reinstall as the best practice.

Repairs work great. No reason to do a format, because a repair reinstalls all drivers. Only reason to format is if you have a lot of junk you want cleaned up and to start fresh.

Here's an Anandtech article on how to do it w/o a reformat/reinstall LINK. I always reformat/reinstall.

Good Luck with it.
