Going from 256MB to 1GB = Significant boost?

Probably not. you probably don't use up 256, unless you ar working for Lucas arts on an SGI machine,or are entering vast amounts of data at lightning speed.

Spend your money elsewhere. Increase ram as you require it, not for bragging rights.

What OS do you run, and what exactly are you doing with it?

Some OS's don't even recognize that much memory. BUT, if you are running something like Exchange, it will suck up every last morsel of memory it can.

I agree with the above...I have 512mb ddr and most times I still have over 180-250 left over...

I run autcadd 2000 and do some heavy 3d rendering, along with encoding a divx movie with gknot and nanub, through in a couple webpages open and downloading some stuff and I still have 180 left...

512 I really think is the limit unless you are doing server activities...

When I edit images (some drawings and photos), I can use almost 512MB easily. But memory usage doesn't always stay up there.

Basically, the answer I have to give is that if you already have 256MB of RAM, and have to ask to see if you need more, you probably aren't doing anything that will come close to stressing 1GB.

Same current games will, but there aren't any games that are worth playing in that range :)
