Going from 2001FP to wide: 2005FPW or 2007FPW?

Hi everyone,

Have had my 2001FP for a year and loved 1600x1200 for Photoshop, movies, games, etc., especially since it replaced a 15" Viewsonic TFT. That said I really want to go widescreen. Dell seems to be the best combo of cheap and reliable now, as it was a year ago. I've provisionally ruled out 2405FPW because I don't think my system can drive games at 1920x1200 comfortably. I also have the impulse buyer's trigger finger and don't want to wait for the 2407FPW.

Normally I'd just go straight for the 2007FPW, but I read the lengthy thread about banding and that's caused me to consider the older model. I don't expect I'll see banding if it IS a problem with the TFT panels Dell uses or indeed the onboard DVI decoder as some suspect, but I *might*. And the 2005FPW is $100 cheaper.

That said, what will I be missing if I buy the 2005FPW instead of the 2007FPW? I'm slightly aware of HDCP support, Vista concerns, etc., but I haven't explored it in depth yet. Thanks!

No one seems to have been able to find any mention of HDCP actually being supported in the 2007 (as opposed to the pre-release speculation), so unless it's there and no one's figured it out yet (kinda unlikely IMO), there isn't much of a point in going with the more expensive 2007 unless you want the nicer stand. I'm quite happy with my 2005FPW, and it should be relatively cheap to buy these days (even new). I don't think you'll be disappointed if you go for the 2005. :)

Muchas gracias... nothing better than hearing "buy the cheaper one!" when you have an itchy trigger finger!

If you're picking one up from dell, do a little looking around. I got $60 dropped off of mine by applying a "Consumer Electronics" coupon code in there.

Yeah, good pointer... those coupons expire tonight. I think mine came to $469 with free shipping. We'll see if it has rampant banding.
