I have what is probably a very simple question/problem with installing xp pro over 2000 on my pc.

I have windows 2000 on my pc, bought xp pro and wanted to install it, install went fine chose FULL INSTALL thinking it would install over the 2000 on the C drive, but when i rebooted it now says which os do you want to run (2000 or xp pro).

During the xp pro install, I didn't see any options for reformatting or partitioning - but would LIKE to know how to get into all that (is it something like escape during bootup with xp disc in or something?).

Again I know this is probably a very silly question but I rarely install an os so I don't have alot of experience in this area and was hoping someone could let me know what I am doing wrong and or how to fix this 2 os thing.

In the beginning it says, "Press enter to install xp on the selected partition." You need to delete that partition, create a new one and then install xp.

When the Install first asks you what you want to do Upgrade or Install choose Installand then there should be a Advanced Option you should select. Continue and it will giveYou
the option to Choose the Partition and File System. Select that. Then from there Continue and you will get to delete the Win2K Partition and format and reinstall WinXP.

I believe this happens when you just reformat without repartitioning(though, it's been awhile, so I may be wrong). What I have been able to find is that it's just the windows installer being confused, and merely deleting the 2000 pro line in boot.ini will do the trick. Along with this, you will want to disable the boot menu, from, well, it's in the startup section of the "my computer" properties, someone else will have to fill you in on the details (I run linux 95% of the time I use my computer, the other 5% is games, so I haven't been to that paritcular screen in awhile).

In case that was a mess...

If I understand what you said correctly...

2k _did_ get deleted.
The windows installer just added a menu item for it unnecessarily for it.
That can be removed by editing boot.ini.
