Going from 1080P to 1600P, sell ref 780ti for a 970 G1?

I'm currently gaming on a reference 780TI with 1080P monitor. I have a Dell 30" 1600P coming and I wondering if it would be worth it to sell it now while I can still get a decent price for it for a 970 G1. Seeing that in the latest games like Unity, the 970 takes out the 780ti by virtue of extra 1gb of Vram and that Nvidia is basically going to not really focus on Kepler drivers anymore, is now the time to switch before the 780ti drops to $200? Or should I just go all the way to a 980? Not planning on SLI as I've had issues before in the past with multiple GPU's.

My rig has a 3770K o/c to 4.2 with a Corsair AX850 PS.

You are in a really tough spot because there is no viable single-GPU upgrade from 780Ti at 1600P. If you are not overclocking, neither the 970 nor the 980 are real upgrades. They will do almost nothing for your gameplay experience at 1600P.

While it is true that 980 is slightly faster in Unity and FC4 than 780Ti, it's still too slow on its own at 1600P. That's all that matters.

Take a look at this:

DAI - 980 is not going to give you more playability, 970 is slower

FC4 - 970/980 are faster but it's hardly relevant at this level of performance

Unity - same story

COD:AW - 980 is barely faster

LoF - Not seeing any value in upgrading to a 980 for 1600P

The only way for you to upgrade if you go 780Ti/970/980 SLI or 290/290X CF. Otherwise, you have to keep waiting for next gen single-GPU cards such as GM200/210/390X. If you sell 780Ti and get the 970 G1, since that 780 is reference and Gigabyte G1 970 is one of the fastest out of the box, you will basically get similar performance but lower power usage and better features/4GB of VRAM with Maxwell. If you are going for a performance upgrade, only the 980 will do, but even then it will be minor at your resolution.

I also think if you sell your 780Ti for $350-370 now and spend $550-600 on a 980 for 7-13% more performance, that's kinda like throwing $ away since at 1600P that performance gain is a drop in the bucket to really feel the difference.

How does games like unity give you confidence to invest in newer nv hardware?

Thanks for the replies guys, now I'm thinking about just finding a used 780ti to try sli again. Worried about the 3gb vram... Will my psu power 2 780ti's at 1100?

From what I've been reading the last few hours it seems like while the 980 is faster it has a smaller bus width which causes some bottleneck issues at large resolutions, and it's barely an upgrade over your current GPU anyway.

I think the 780Tis have a wider bus anyway so are more appropriate for SLI, I've been reading that SLI for 970s and 980 aren't really going to help for super high resolutions.

Having said that 2560x1600 isn't too huge I have a smexy 30" Dell myself, it's only about 2x more pixels than 1080p which is only 1/2 that of 4k and less than triple HD monitors so I'm thinking most games will be fine.

The Hardocp overclocking review of the 980 showed BF4 at 2560x1600 in ultra settings at something just shy of 80fps average. So maybe wait and test to see what frame rate you really get. Otherwise I'd recommend a 2nd 780ti.

Good choice of monitor by the way, I got my 30" about 6 years ago and have not once regretted it :)

Get the monitor first then see how the frame rates are. You will have to turn some of the settings down, but you may find a happy compromise and avoid having to get a new video card.

I would suggest you wait for the GM200. The 3GB is a problem in modern games like AC Unity , COD AW , Far cry 4, Lords of the Fallen, Ryse Son of Rome, Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor. Both GTX 970 and GTX 980 are not significant upgrades from a 780 Ti.
