That's not a very good idea at all. You're gonna run into a CPU bottleneck, even if it's overclocked. A Phenom II X4 955 @4.0GHz=Core i3-2120 @stock in gaming, and it's well documented that if you're running an Enthusiast card you should move up from a 2120 to at least a 2400.

What graphics card are you running now? I'd recommend you don't upgrade to a GTX 680 until you can get a faster CPU, starting with an i5-3540 if you don't want to OC past 4GHz or run stock and a 3570K if you want a 4GHz+ OC.

Just don't buy a GTX 680 for now unless you want it to be limited by your CPU.

The 955@4GHz will be faster than the 2120.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-gaming-cpu,2971-5.html

They are equals around when the AMD is clocked at 3.6-3.7GHz mark (975/980 speed)

However, not knowing what video card you have I can't say what the best bang for buck will be.

What is your budget for the PSU? This will ultimately be the best deciding factor. Fans and the optical drives aren't so critical. What kind(s) of HDD's do you have?

At $200 this is a very good PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817151102

Seasonic X850 Gold. 850 REAL watts and fully modular. For $60 more 1000W by Seasonic http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817151105

I'll second this. Except for the 1000w. A high quality supply like the Seasonc X850 is FAR more than plenty even for SLI 680's. In fact an even better idea is save $50 and go down to the X750! (Personally I'd go down to even the X650 but it's hardly any less money so the X750 is good buy).

Yeah... no, it will not.

hope you know the 955 beat the 2100 on that review you just posted

Perhaps if you have particularly bad eyesight.

The 2100 was faster in Starcraft II, tied in Just Cause 2, and slower in Skyrim. Overall, they were tied, which means it takes a 4GHz Phenom II X4 to tie a 2100. The 2120, given its 200MHz higher clock speed than the 2100, would win overall.

Min is what matters most in gaming; when you get framerate dips it makes gameplay a lot less smoother. You want to minimize those dips as much as possible.

My recommendation? What I said before: save up, and then buy a Core i5 and Z77 motherboard as well as that GTX 680 you want. That's really the best decision.

Can you buy from TigerDirect? They have the 3570K at $230, which is only $10 more than the price at Newegg for the 2500K. The difference is small, so it's worth it to go Ivy Bridge.

The Power Supply is overkill. Buy the one I have instead, the 750W version. It's enough for two overclocked 7970s easily.

The graphics card, the 7970 isn't worth it right now unless you wanted to overclock. If you wanted to overclock, then it's pretty much tied with the GTX 680. A suggestion: the Sapphire HD 7970OC edition is $460 right now. Get that instead.

G.Skill RAM is okay, but not that great. Want great RAM? Buy two of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820147094

These will go to DDR3-2000 easily for $48.

Going by the sole review available, which is not from a source I trust (HardOCP), the Z77 Extreme4 isn't that great, at least when it comes to overclocking and the BIOS. With the money you saved from the PSU and GPU I'd say you should buy an Extreme6, which was recently featured on Tom's Hardware and they recommended all aspects of it.

Now go buy some hardware.

dude it's a wash. It would be utterly stupid to upgrade from a 955 to a 2120.

This is an example where Intel fanboism has no place here.

Yeah I kept asking around they said just pick up the gtx 680. I shouldn't have a problem with it so that's what I'm going to do. If arma 3 doesn't run well on this cpu with the gpu I'll upgrade but I'll find that out soon enough just by playing arma oa.. Just waiting on the card to come in stock now

I never said you should. I said AMD is behind, and used that as a reference. If you'd actually pay attention to the thread you'd see I recommended a Core i5.
