Going for 3Ghz...from XP90 with AS3 & 55CFM to SI-120 with AS5 and 125CFM - X2 3800+

I hit the wall with my XP90 at 2.85Ghz with 1.55v at 60oC.

I reckon that the changes from XP90 to SI-120 with give me over 3oC.

Change for Arctic Silver 3 to AS5 with give me another 3oC.

And using a 125CFM YS-Tech fan will be better (can not guess a reduction for this will give and I don't want to go for a noisy Delta!) and run it through a speed controller to lower the noise later.

Would you agree this is about the best air cooling combination I can get at the moment?

I think that you'd gain about 5 degrees max from those changes. Not worth it from a practical standpoint, but if you really want to shoot for it go ahead.

i'll bet you money that you can not get 3Ghz stable, even with maxing the volts !!!!

and i mean 12 hours prime for small and large FFT's stable.

I agree. I probably won't get beyond 2.9Ghz but as I've said in other posting I will be putting my XP90 with my old 3000+ and mobo in my PVR next year when I upgrade my mobo and graphics - so it's not really a matter of cost.

If I have the time to prime for 24hours+ I may take you up on that bet!

If you have the tiime ?

Do you have to be there while it's running ?

Maybe he needs to be doing things with the PC, and doesn't have the time to let it sit for 24 hours being unusable...
Most people get PC's to use them for things like work, or games, or media tasks, not to sit around running stress tests...

agree, benchmarks seem pointless 3dmark05 is funny you get like a .5fps increase and that raises ur 3dmark like 100points lol. forget benchmarks as long as the game is smooth i am happy.

When I'm running prime to test for stability, I go ahead and use the PC for whatever else I normally do.. Might be a little choppy, but stable is stable.. No point in OC'ing otherwise..

WHen I test for stability, I do work either on my laptop or my older comuter.

Good Point.

Does everybody agree this is the best Air Cooler combination I can get though?

IMHO, if you reallly want the best, get like a TT big typhoon, or a sythe ninja and stick a high speed 120mm fan on there. with my 3800+ at 1.4vcore I get low 50's for load temps with the TT, and thats with a 1300 rpm fan. with a 2500+ rpm fan, your temps would drop quite a bit more than that.

Gronich I wish you luck, but I have tried my 3800+ X2 on my vapochill and it still was not stable at 3ghz. For me one of the cores had trouble keeping up with the other. For me the extra vcore never did stabilze things.

I've heard the BT outperforms the XP-120, but only by 1-2C. Either way, you're reaching the limits of air cooling.

Thanks for the input - I've seen reviews were the SI-120 beats both the Big Typhoon and the Sythe Ninja so unless there is another HS which I haven't heard of I will place my order on Wednesday.

Ronnie - Your probably right! I just had a dream that my next [current] CPU would be 3Ghz but when the X2 3800+ came out an it's low price I couldn't resist! Hoping to match my old Winnie 3000+s overclock of 2.52Ghz but for two cores I was amazed when I started hitting 2.9Ghz...So if I can get closer to 3Ghz it will be a dream fulfilled.

Will post my results ASAP.

Then just go out and get yourself a P4 setup and your dream will be realized ;)

That way you don't need to buy a space heater either!

I've bought a Silverstone fan off eBay - 110CFM with speed controller - for a reasonable price I may get a Tornado as well - just for a laugh - see if I can get my PC to hover!

i coulda sworn u posted a screenshot somewhere that showed you failed prime at 2.8ghz at the voltage in ur sig?

Seriously. What is the point of going to 3Ghz if you can't prove 2.8Ghz is stable with dual instances of Prime95 Large FFT stability tests?

My highest prime is at 2.85Ghz which failed at 1.47v after 6 to 8 hours...

Prime @ 2852Mhz

but completed 6 hours and 8 hours respectively. When I upped the voltage to 1.55v my load temperature rose to 60oC after priming for a few minutes which I think is pushing it.

Therefore I'm trying more cooling.

i've never seen ur prime shot for 2.8ghz at 1.4v, but i'll give u the benefit of the doubt...so lets ASSUME that it was rock stable at 1.4v at 2.8ghz...

if you bump it up to 1.47v and it fails with only an additional 52mhz, we can assume that possibly needs about 1.5-1.52v to be prime stable at 2852mhz...

so thats a whopping .1-.12v required for an extra 52mhz....so lets assume the same trend...and bump 1.5-1.52v to 1.6-1.62v for another 50mhz for a total of 2.9ghz...

u'd need 1.7-1.75v to be hit 3ghz with any stability at all and the xp120 just wont cut it

BT with a different 120mm fan would probably be the best air cooling for the money.

3 Ghz won't be happening though. Even with watercooling and 1.65 volts, the highest i've done Sp2004 at is 2.91 Ghz and that was only one instance. My highest dual prime is 2.87 Ghz dual SP2004 small FFTs. And keep in mind this is custom water cooling with a maximum load of 38C. IHS removed.
