So what do you guys think, taking into account price/performance ratio, stability, speed, etc etc...

-Dual athlonMP (a7m266-d?)
-nForce (sigh, long wait)
-trusty dual PIII (IWill DVD266?)

Also, lemme hear your votes for the proc / and mb model.

Thx for indulging me :)

What about just using regular Athlons for a dual setup? They say they will work. :)

I just recently went to a dual CPU system. I just built a Tyan K7 Thunder with 2 x 1.2 AthlonMP's, 1GB ECC REG. PC2100 Crucial, Adaptec 3200S with 4 x Cheeath X15's RAID 0/1, and a GeFDorce 3. It is the most stable AMD board that I have ever used and the performance is incredible. The Tyan Dual Socket A board is great, a little tricky to set up, nut once you hjave it up and running, it is a awesome board. The price isn't to bad either. If you do choose the Tyan K7, Don't use the NMB 460watt power supply, it is causing all kinds of problems with this system. PC Power & Cooling makes a 450watt power supply with the 24pin & 8pin power leads needed for the Tyan K7, it is a bit more expensive but worth the extra money. You may be waiting awhile for any other Dual Socket A boards to come out, MSI has problems from trying to use the Via 686B Southbridge. I haven't heard a word about any other manufacturers Dual Socket A boards.

Asus says their socket A dually solution is due out "july 2001"

I haven't heard of a dual nForce mobo yet, but I haven't kept a lot of tabs on their status.

and you'll probably have to wait another month for dual amd solutions(other than tyan).
What setup are you looking at? what are you going to be using this for?
Good intek SMP products are out there(asus), but you have to pay the extra moolah for intel cpu's.

If you want cheap now, i'd say go with intel, but you're better off waiting a month or two

how much did that setup cost you? ( so I can fulfill my dream ;) )

Beeker, why would you spend that much on a system with everything top notch and then add in what is probably the second worst RAID card on the market (second to Adaptec's own 2100s)? I would recommend returning that and getting a Mylex or ATTO controller that will actually perform up to snuff. Should have waited a week or so on the drives, the next generation X15 just reached retailers this weekend. Should be the new standard in storage.

How come PC Power&Cooling has a 350W dual Athlon PS? I thought 460 was the recommended minimum. Was that just posturing by AMD, or does PC P&C know something that AMD doesn't?

I can wait a month or two. Do you think that the dual athlonMP boards will be significantly better than the dual intel boards out now? And as I see it, the athlonMPs aren't that much cheaper than the pentiums. Also, any word on when those boards will start shipping?

There are quite a few places on pricewatch listing them in stock. The one with the best resellerratting is monarch computer systems.

The only frusterating thing about the Tyan mobo is that it needs a new case/PS :( I like the fact that it comes with integrated SCSI, cuz those cards are damn expensive anyway, but that makes me worry about bandwith issues too since the pci bus is only 64/33. Hmm...Maybe I'll just burn some hundred dollar bills in the fireplace before I do something stupid ;)

I've been tracking prices for my new system in a spreadsheet on my website. I too am holding out for the Asus 760MP board. I already have non-ECC PC2100 sticks (512MB total) and a few other components. I have to see what will officially be integrated before I buy much else. 60GXPs in RAID5 could be fun tho. :p

You could probably get $3000 for one, but you didn't hear that from me :D
