Going down to a 22" LCD?

My PC can't run Crysis @ 1920x1200 using the auto detected settings. My specs are:

E6550 @ 3Ghz
4GB DDR2
Radeon 4870
Dell 24" LCD (1920x1200 native)

I figure my options are:
1. "downgrade" to a 22" LCD w/ a 1650x1050 native
2. upgrade my cpu (not sure this will do any good)
3. throttle back from the auto detected settings (not sure how "optimized" they are)

Throttle down your settings. It probably put everything at "very high" or some other nonsense.

Just realized that my CPU was back to stock speeds. Going to try overclocking again and try again tomorrow.

4. Use centered timings on your Dell and drop its resolution to 11x8 if you really want to run it smoothly at "very high"
5. Set your settings mostly to high/medium and play at 19x12
6. Buy a HD4870x2 for a crossfire x3 solution

Lower AA, and if that's not enough then you can start lowering the detail settings.

Seems like lowering the AA helped a good bit. The auto tune cranked everything to high and set the AA at 2x. Seems like a lot of power would be required for that.

My load speed was also crap till I realized that my weekly backup was running.

It's a game, not a desktop application - it scales fine at non-native resolutions on your 24" LCD. You are nuts to downgrade your LCD, just for a game.

Running Vista? Right click on the icon and select DX9 (since you're not running Very High anyway). Drop the AA to none and you should have plenty of speed at 1920x1200. The game will look the same as DX10 High and run smooth to boot.

kmmatney, didn't know that i didn't have to run at native resolution. only reason i was thinking of setting down in size was to get a lower native.

Qbah, I only get DX10 benefits at "Very High"?

btw how do you set centered timings on the dell lcd?

oh and do you have to play crysis? there's tons of games that will run well enough on that card. i mean you're not gonna play crysis until you die, it's not a big deal if you can't run it well.

Seems like suggesting I dont play a game I want to play is silly. Granted playing a single game isn't life or death, but none of this is. Doesn't change the fact that I WANT to play it.

it does not look the same 😛
=only to people with XP

yes, you need "very high" to get all the advantages of Vista; make sure you start it in DX10 ..

BUT .. you should eliminate AA; AF is optional and has a minor impact on performance and visuals imo]

Lower shadows and shaders .. they take a big performance hit at very high

So maybe crank the details up to very high and scale back the shadows and shaders?

Fixing the processor back to it's OC'd state helped, but I still think there was some lag at some points. Combined with my MX Revolution lagging (either due to distance from the USB receiver or maybe from my wireless router).

The game looks the same in DX9 Vista High and DX10 Vista High. You'll see a difference only when you push the details to Very High (which is overkill for a HD4870 at 1920). So if you wish to play at 1920x1200 you need to set the details to High. Since the game looks the same at High at DX9 and runs a lot better, why bother with DX10?

Ohh and DX10 Very High plus a tweak is  Runs like utter crap though (10-15FPS). But looks absolutely stunning! Like the pre-release screens. It looks like a movie in a lot of the jungle parts (until you meet enemies 😛).

The game looks very nice at High too so that we're clear 🙂

Do not downgrade to a 22in LCD, they are all crappy 6bit TN panels and will look like garbage beside your 2407 (I've done side by side comparisons, colour reproduction and viewing angles are not even close).

Turn off AA if it is on, you can't run AA in Crysis on high settings without SLI/CrossFire. I run at 1920x120- everything Very High with no AA and no AF and it's very playable. My CPU and GPU are faster than yours but not by that much. I'd try very high for most settings and drop some back to high, but avoid AA unless you want to play medium detail.

I went down to DX9 mode, seemed to improve playability. I think with a little more CPU I could probably play everything on very high. Maybe if I find a deal on an 8400 I'll have to upgrade.
