Going data only with Red Pocket Mobile - will it work?

Red Pocket Mobile has data only plans, and I've been thinking of trying it out with a smartphone. They have sims for both AT&T and T-Mobile networks (Edit: The data only plan is for the T-Mobile network sims only).

So what I'm trying to understand is, if I buy a sim, go with the 1GB data only plan, and use it with any unlocked smartphone that has the necessary bands, I can have 1GB/month mobile data for only $10/month? With Google Voice/Hangouts I wouldn't need any voice or text, so this should be doable right?

About my only concern would be that you can make a call with 1 bar of 3G/4G, but it's really hard (in my actual experience) to make a good VOIP call with less than 3 bars of 3G/4G service - and the call quality tends to be very tower specific.

But if you've tried it where you are and you are happy with the quality of the voice calls over VOIP, then I'd say it should be totally doable.

Well I haven't tried it, but for only $10 I'm more than willing to take it for a spin. If it works well enough the savings would be huge.

$10 a month for 1gb data? That's a great idea. I don't see why it wouldn't work. I will do this when my contract ends next year.

Okay so just FYI for anyone thinking about this, it only applies to their "GSMT" sim cards, which means the ones on T-Mobile's network, not AT&T.

Are you sure there's an AT&T version of that data only RedPocket SIM? I'm pretty sure they only had a T-Mobile version of it, which wouldn't work for me. I would have tried an AT&T version right away.

Edit: Obviously I posted with full excitement right after I read the first post without reading any of the replies. Never mind :D

Heh, me too. Quickly made the thread thinking I found an AT&T compatible data only sim, but I should still be okay with the T-Mobile one.
