edit: maybe this will help-

i cant connect to the router's main page (192.168...) via the main computer but logging in with one of the computer's connected to the router shows that the main computer has a dhcp address

Since ICS does the handing out of IPs, your router should be setup as a switch. ICS essentially is a cheap, and mostly crappy, router.

Connect the Host computer to a regular port om thr Router (leave the WAN port open).

Change the core IP of the Router to be with a number that is of ICS subnet (192.168.o.x) and disable the Router's DHCP.

of course, why would i need 2 "routers"

so i suppose it now a matter of how do i use my router (belkin f5d7230-4) as a switch? im assuming i just turn of dhcp settings, is that all?

-edit, post before reading jackmds reply

jack, essentially you are saying that i should do what i posted (turn off the dhcp settings)?

i think i just understood jacks post and im going to attempt it now.

to you kelemvor, LOL

comcast has been out twice (unfortunatly someone else was home both times, theyve been here numerous other times when im here but they never(everneverever) have an "extra modem").

sadly enough, my network setup dumbfounded the technician both times, one guy spent 2 hours doing literally nothing and the other guy left my network setup intact, but connected the broken ethernet from the modem to one of the routers routed ports (ie, not the WAN).

of course the internet worked (he left my setup intact) but ........ that was a bad day.

so you just need a cable modem?

is buying a used one not an option? seems like it would save a shitload of hassle for you to just spend the 30 bucks or whatever to get a modem with a working ethernet jack.

try fs/t or ebay.

upon further review, jack, i have no idea what youre trying to say

sauron - its cable internet/phone service, idk about getting a new one then using it/setting it up

Probably because you do not know how ICS works. ICS can work only of the IPs are on 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254, so all the component past the Host (including the Router) has to conform to this subnet.

However, as posted above, you probably can find a used cable Modem for $10.

Keeping an Host computer On all the time end up after a while more expensive in electricity than buying an inexpensive Modem (If apply, even if the Electricity is paid by the parents it is still a family expense).

So save yourself the philosophical issues and go for a functional Modem.

Does Comcast have a storefront somewhere? Time Warner has stores in various malls and things and they have modem and such there for swapping. See if you can just take yours in and get a new one. Don't have Comcast try to setup your network, just have them give you a working modem.
