Ok I have a brand spanking new Dual Opteron 280 system, Tyan Thunder K8WE S2895 MOBO, 4GB Kingston registered RAM, WINXP 64 Edition, 600watt PSU.

I have a temporary GeForce card which will be replaced by a 7800GTX 512 Mb MSI card as soon as my PC guy gets hold of it.

I don't game at all. I am 3d designer and ideally I should have a Quadro 4500FX card but $$$. Anyway my temporary card the GF 6600 crashes my whole system when I move my 3d softwares window to the second display. The BSOD error I get is nv4_disp.dll.
I have tried all driver versions and 77.77 works the best...the other ones are totally CRAP!!!!!!!!

The 77.77 can crash the system as well if I move the 3d software window wildly to the second display. In single display mode the 77.77 seems to be OK.

The other thing I notice is that my second display flickers every 15 seconds when I use my 3d application. Flickering stops as soon as I quit my 3d software.

My question is-

1) Will the 7800GTX/512Mb card cause this same problem?

2) If I do get the Quadro 4500 card instead of the 7800GTX what are the chances of it being buggy as well? Even though the drivers are designed specially to work with my 3d package

3) nv4_disp.dll what the hell is it?

Btw I have sent the system back once to my PC guy. He checked each part and reinstalled the OS but this problem did not go. To me it seems card + driver related!

Any advice?

If you have 4 sticks of memory in your system, take 2 out and try it. I've heard of some funky problems when all memory modules are populated and some sets of nVidia drivers.

Yes I have 4x1GB Kingston sticks (registered). Ok will give it a shot although that is not really a solution...I need the extra RAM for my work :-(

nv4_disp.dll is the display driver for your video card.

beyond that, I dont have much advice to give besides maybe doing what Rent suggested and try to take out 2 sticks of memory
