Yeah, me and my one friend are getting a little tired of being indoors with our computers so we're gonna go canoeing along the Allegheny for a change. He used to go a whole lot and I went once before and IIRC, it was rather fun. We're gonna go for three days and two nights while renting the canoe. Any suggestions on what to bring/do?

True dat!
I would NOT bring any sort of walkman, Laptop, or anything that requires batteries (ommit flashlight and camera).

As for what to bring...
Personally, I like to backpack, so alot of my suggestions will come from that knowledge. I have been whitewater rafting and canoeing a few times. I would bring plastic bags. Stick all of your clothes in a plastic bag, even double bag it if you want. Do this so your stuff stays dry. I also stick my sleeping bag inside of a plastic bag. I do this by sticking the bag inside the stuff sack and then stuffing the sleeping bag. This way you have those two layers of protection and it is still easy to pack. As for caonoeing... I would probably bring a cooler. You won't have ice for all that long, but you could at least keep your food insolated. It would work well on the boat (you dont have to carry it on your back :)). As for food, Salami is always good. If you have money, but that expensive freeze dried stuff, I recomend the chilie. But that stuff is expensive. You can go to longs and buy stuff much cheeper, and if you are any good with spices you can make it 10x better. BTW, don't wear deoderant. You will stink, take a bath in the water (but don't use soap that will harm the waters). If you use deoderant then the bugs will eat you alive, literaly. They attract to that stuff like no other. Speaking of insects, a mosquito head net would be a wise decision. I don't know how bad they are there, but I know that arround rivers, they can be exceptionaly bad. They are cheep and very small/light. But they are worth their weight in gold. I would suggest something that has a metal ring to hold it away from your face, or get a hat so that it has the same effect. If it doesn't then it will lie against your skin and won't work. If you plan on hiking, I would suggest bringing an extra pair of camp shoes, like tennis shoes or sandales. One of those things that you will just love to have. Bring a book to read if you think you will have time too. Make sure that you check everything BEFORE you go on your trip, so you know that you have evrything. Make a checklist before you pack and then recheck it after. You don't want to be out there with no rain gear if its expected to rain.

As for what to do, have fun! Relax and go at a slow pace. Beign on a river is very relaxing. If you can find a good spot to stop and jump in off of a rock, go for it and spend some time doing it. Hopefully you have a good trip. If you have any more questions, id be happy to answer them. Just drop me a PM or post here.

Good luck!

Sunblock.
& Tie your bags to the canoe so when it tips you don't have to chase your sh!t down-river.

edit: oh yeah, don't reach for or push off by hand from any dead trees lying in the river, that's where mocs like to hang out, coz they will go after your hand.

MOCS ARE BIG SNAKES!!! Bad news. Bad tempers.

Also, take plenty of toilet paper. You don't want to wipe with the wrong leaves. :D

Yup, tie everything together. (and tie your cooler shut, or make sure it's locked or all your food will beat you to the end of your trip)

Keep things you want to stay dry in a waterproof bag of some sort. (anyone for some wet toilet paper?)

If you bring canned food, remember to bring an openner.

I've seen that happen, spend 10 minutes trying to open a can with a knife, not good for the knife.

Yeah, food is one thing. I was thinking about hot dogs and beans. (My favorite meal) Salami sounds alright, what else?

Are there going to be any rapids? Bring a gallon milk jug with the bottom cut off to use as a bailer (in case you get water splashed into the canoe). The handle on the jug makes it easy to use, and you can just tie it on to the thwart.

Good idea.

The Allegheny will likely be pretty calm in midsummer, but it's a good idea to have one either way.

It also might be the law, in Ontario you need a whistle, bailer and a life jacket for each person.
