I've been doing a bit of research, but could use some sage advice from those who've done the camping bit. It's not going to be anywhere extreme, I don't even think we can truly call it camping (San Onofre) but hey, I'm putting up a tent, we're bring the grill and we're staying overnight. All advice is welcome. Any good websites you could point me to would be great as well.

Leave all electronics at home. Plan lavish a lavish meal and do as much ahead as possible. Take an extra tarp. Don't forget a first aid kit. Take plenty of water if none is available on site. Don't forget a corkscrew and bottle opener.

Store all the food in your tent so you can keep an eye on it, otherwise the pesky wildlife will take it all.

Get a good sleeping bag, lots of insect repellent and then, most importantly of all, cancel the trip.

Been camping, didn't get the appeal. I pay good money to have a nice house with indoor plumbing, electricity and a comfortable bed. Why on earth would a person drive hours to sleep on the cold ground? Mankind spent a hundred thousand years trying to evolve beyond that point.

I dunno man, my wife has been camping before and loved it. I OTOH felt the same as you do. Now though as I get older I guess I want to try new things. Plus I think my kids will have a blast.

As for the other two posts, thanks, I'll keep those in mind as I create my checklist of things to pack.

San Onofre is a developed camp site, so you should have fun. Make a list of stuff to bring, because it sucks to forget something simple like matches or the spices for whatever you are grilling. One thing that is a must have for me when tent camping is some kind of pad, cot or mattress to sleep on, since I'm no longer a fan of sleeping on the hard ground.

Have fun!

Some of us enjoy a world that hasn't been improved by man.
Some of us enjoy not being tethered to an environment that requires constant upkeep.
Some of us enjoy rustic pleasures of open fires, lakes, wild animals.
Some of us enjoy being surrounded by sounds that weren't man made.
Some of us enjoy leaving the complexities of the modern world behind.

Well said! And I would say that "improved" is subjective. I don't really think that 5 story parking structures is an improvement.

No first-time camping experience is complete without a good snipe hunt...

Leave all electronics at home.

Still take a cellphone just in case cus accidents can happen or at least one of those devices that can automatically call emergency services and alert them to your position.

I loved camping as a kid. I was in Boy Scouts and loved going camping all the time. Hiking all day and be away from it all and just set up camp and just relax and enjoy the nothingness.

He's car camping on the beach in North San Diego county. There are bathrooms and water available...there's also a nude beach south of the campground or at least there used to be. Bring a camera! ;)

A tent, some type of mattress to sleep on and some blankets and pillows are all you'll need. It isn't that cold out at night, low 60s, so a sleeping bag is overkill.

Smoke keeps away flying insects. Ash keeps away crawling insects.
BUT, Duralogs are much easier to deal with as opposed to tree stumps.

Just a few random tips. If you plan on having a campfire, don't forget to bring a hatchet. Try to keep the door to your tent shut to keep the bugs out. An empty bucket really comes in handy for odd ball things. An air mattress is alot better than sleeping on hard ground. Try setting up your tent before hand to make sure you have all your pieces. Cheap flashlights easily entertain children.

I picked up one of those Coleman extreme coolers for a trip and it did a pretty awesome job keeping ice compared to the other 4 coolers at our site.

Really its car camping. If you think you might need or want it, toss it in the trunk. You can overpack and not have any worries when car camping. backpacking for a week and you wonder if you really need the toothbrush handle to be that long.....

But really like others have said tent, air mattress or somethign soft to sleep on, beer, firewood is nice to have before you go (if you have a supply at home at least) and of course chairs.

If you really forget something you have a car and most places have a small town or store within a few miles so you can go get whatever you forgot.

Hell, he could drive a few miles up the coast to San Clemente and eat at a 5 star restaurant.

Said the guy sitting in an office, house or apartment typing on a computer. Yep, you're a real mountain man.

dont like camping troll elsewhere...

I for one love it, even camping out of a car like that can be loads of fun.

Take loads of beer, get some really good food to cook, and sleep under the stars.

Turn your gd cell phone off too.

The great thing about camping is there's all different kinds. Some enjoy hiking, bicycling, car or, RVing. We usually camp with a large group and feed anywhere from a dozen to thirty people or more. One tip I can give is to bring a comfortable chair.
