Going back to school...

dquan97

Lifer
after 2yrs of being away from it. Graduated in '01 with a BS in Managerial Economics from UCD. I've always wanted to be a doctor (was a Neurobiology & Physiology major in freshman year) because I wanted to help people feel better. Going to be enrolling in the Spring '04 or Fall '04 season @ Sac State (since I live 5mins away from it).

What should I major in? Chemistry? Which major will help me prepare the most?

Right, you just have the take the pre-med courses and do the mcat. Unless you bombed your undergrad GPA and want to get a 4.0 second time around. Then it makes sense to get another undergrad, otherwise you are just pissing your money away.

look into it. I've had friends who are EE majors and pre-med (and they got into top schools) all they did was take the few extra pre-med courses.

I have a 2.7GPA (which is the result of gaming) and haven't taken the necessary pre-med classes. In going for another BS degree, would my GPA transfer to the new school?

Your grade won't transfer, but they will use it as a basis for admission. Most colleges I have attended only count the GPA of the courses you take at their school, and usually have a minimum hours requirement. IE: You can't take 20 hours, get straight A's, and graduate magna cum laude. So if you have to take 67 hours like me to finish as a transfer student, then basically you use the GPA you earned for those last 67 hours towards your current degree.

So if I graduated with a BS in Chemistry after getting straight As in those classes, I still won't have a competitive GPA for Med school?

Awww, ok, makes sense.
No, if you get a second BS at a different school, you will start fresh on the gpa.
Of course, the med schools you apply to will need a transcript from both schools and will probably want an explanation about why your grades were so poor with your first degree.
But if you have a second degree in a scientific field with a high gpa, I doubt they will care much about your first degree.

I did a similar thing, but to get a decent job, not to go to grad school.
I had a BS in General Science w/ emphasis in chemistry with a 2.5 gpa and was looking for some kind of lab tech/chemistry type job. The only interviews I got were for things like life insurance sales jobs.

I went back to school at a different school and spent 2 years to get my BS in Computer Science with a 3.7 gpa. The timing wasn't great since I graduated in 2001 right in the midst of the dotcom crash, but I still got interviews with Intel, Kodak, and two local software companies and ended up getting a decent paying job at Kodak. I didn't list my GPA for the first degree and nobody asked me anything about it.

In your second degree, did you transfer any units from your BS in Science? Did the school just transfer the units and not the grades?

UCD = UC Davis?

I'm lookin' to go to Cali for college. Though mainly looking at Pamona/Pitzer. UC system = big! (and doesn't like out-of-staters)

At the second school, they did not include the grades from the transfer credits in the GPA calculation. So my transcript for the second degree only shows the classes I took at that school and uses only those classes to compute the GPA.

Not sure if it matters that the two schools were both part of the Oregon University System (University of Oregon then Southern Oregon University), but the way it worked was that if you already had a bachelor's degree, that counted as having completing all the general education requirements. So I was only required to complete the CS major requirements and not the general ed classes to get my second BS.
So I had to take about 18 CS classes and one math class (Discrete Structures).

So if you had all As in your second try at college, what will your GPA be in the transcript? Will it really be a 4.0?

I'm thinking about doing the same thing, dquan97.

Do you plan on being a full-time student again?

I'd like to go back to school for a degree in child psychology/child psychiatry. My goal is to be enrolled within 3 years... I have to go back and take all the pre-med classes though, which won't be fun.
