Going back to school - help me choose an appropriate laptop

I took a 3 year break from school and im finally going back at the end of this month. So students, tell me, whats the best tool for the job? Back in '04 i was getting tempted by the tablet PC's, as they looked perfect for taking notes - like notepads with unlimited pages. Are tablet PC's still being developed? Anything new come out to replace that segment of the market? Am i better off with just a regular laptop?

And the last question isn't so much about computers as it is about vanity. Do most people use computers to take notes, now? Or am i going to be that annoying kid making all the noise on the keyboard?

Chances are you won't need anything but pen and paper.

In my community college I got all A's (except English) with pen/paper my first semester and almost nobody used laptop to take notes. They used them to play WoW or surf the web during class. Some prof's even banned laptops from classroom.

I've been in college for 2 years and the only time a laptop would help me is in my programming classes. Even then, just save the files you need to a thumb drive.

Most people still take notes with pen and paper, and use computers in the lab or home/dorm to write up papers or create presentations etc.

The G-Note 700 is the one I use. I take it home and then download it to my PC for reading. However, if you have to take a PC with you or if I have to choose one, it will be the Eee PC 4G. It's just light and small and perfect for getting early start with your home work while at school or in the library.

Do any of you have any thoughts on the Fujitsu 4220? I've been looking around and it seems like this convertible has been getting great reviews... the only downside is the cost.

Or an Asus Eee PC, just because I want someone to install XP on it and tell us how it went.

Actually, there has been a lot of people already using XP lite on their Eee PC's. They even went as fas as modifying the screen with a touch screen as shown here.
