Going back to HK, but my British passport expired

I am only a permanent resident in the United States, so I only have that permanent resident card instead of the green card.
I have a Hong Kong Identification card.
I also have a British passport from Hong Kong, but it expired last year.

I am going back on Friday but I wonder if they will let me go back?

no
you need a passport to get in. You wont be able to get in and they will more then liely send you back.

you should have taken care of this sooner.

go visit the british embassy to see what you can do.

What you need is a nonexpired british passport and your permanent resident card. That is what I use to go back and forth between Canada and the US. I am a Chinese citizen but a permanent resident of the US, so i have that card.

this is most likely true, for internation flights they check before you get on the olane now,

i know it takes AT LEAST 3 weeks to get a US passport renewed, you might be able to get one from the british embassy but im doubtfull

Yeah, shoulda checked earlier

My sis and her bf were going on a vacation to Japan recently... and he found out the night before that his passport had expired. She wasn't too pleased...

in HK they will let you in as long as your ID card is valid

but i doubt the airlines would let you out of the airport terminal because they need to be sure that you can get back into teh states and US immigration wont allow you to come in without a valid passport. you can talk to them that you will get it renewed in HK and then go to a British consulate in HK to get a renewed passport. I think they have some type of express service in HK British consulate where you pay extra to get it expedited and have it sent to you in 5-6 business days.

wrong, my friend did that once. she had a 2 stops(SF and Japan) for her flight departed from new york. the custom in NY let her go; the custom in SF let her go. the custom in Japan caught her, she showed them every documents she got and they let her go (maybe send her back to US?). once she got back to HK, she was safe since she was a perm resident there.

you can get the HK passport in chinese embassy, but I don't think there is anything that you can do now, since your flight is friday.

try what my friend did, her passport expired like a month before. 😉 it should be fine with US custom.

sh!T!!!!

gshock888, you sure I can go to HK without showing my British passport as long as I have my HK ID card??
Because I can apply for a british passport or US citizenship during my stay in HK. I will be there for two months. I just want to know if I can go to HK.

Can I give them an excuse that I am going back to renew my passport?

yes.

passport = document for travel
HKID = Greencard = guarantee that you can get into hk.

heck...my BNO expired long ago and I should have changed my HK ID when I was 18 years ago.

if you passed the US custom, you are good to go, good luck. then you can fix your passport in HK. they do work much faster than in US.

nothing can be done in 1 business day.

ok here's the skinny:

US Green card = permanent resident card
you need this along with a passport (UK or HK) for American re-entry

HK Permanent ID
this is all you need to enter HK

HK/UK Passport
not needed to enter HK but either one must be presented to US immigration, with your PermRes. card when you return. Either one can be applied for in HK and for about 1-2 week expedited service. They cannot have you pick up (at least back in 2000) the passport and you must provide a HK address where they can FedEx it to.

And no, 2 months is not enough time for you to become american citizen and its a lot more trouble to do that overseas. Forget that part.

When I went back in 2001, I went with my friends and I found out I forgot my green card at the airport when I was checking in. They told me I must need it and they cant let me on without it because US will not let me back in. I told them my sister is going to HK also and pleaded with the lady for about 2 minutes and then she let me through after speaking to a manager. Then I had my sister fedex the Green card to me in HK (which was risky even though it was FedEx)

So yeah, its possible they're let you off the hook, just tell them you will be in HK for a long time and you can apply for HK/UK passport there.

I think you can only re-apply for a UK Passport (BNO) if your born in HK, otherwise just get a HK passport. no need to get both. HK passport gets you to more places without visa than the BNO.

Good luck to you.

one more thing.

be SURE that your HK ID is still valid

and

BRING ALL YOUR EXPIRED DOCUMENTS so you can renew in HK and present to the airline (yes it expired but your bringing it to HK for renewal)

It doesn't hurt to try,

your max. stay should not be over 6 month. (you say 2 months... should be fine.) Don't say long.
if you get on the plane (pass checkin counter, and Immigration etc), HKID is the only thing you need to enter HK. (don't stand in the line for passport, just use these lines for HKID.)

Don't go too early, wait till the line is long... (wait, the line always long in airport)
Show the PR (green card) first. Then passport.

Worst case, get the phone number of the airline handly, in case you need to call and arrange a later date...

If you have HKID card, you can get into HK without showing a passport.

Your only problem is if you need the passport to leave the US.
