Compatibility Mode in Windows XP is nowhere near as useful as a regular install of Win98.
Theres a buttload of games I could never get running in XP. That stupid compatibility thing just doesnt help much.

I didn't mention SC because it was obvious :p And I played it to death. I will add max payne to the list however.

That's a damned good list. Once I get home to look at my list, I'll add a few suggestions.

Dungeon Keeper 2 (never could get it to run on anything but Win98)
Jedi Knight

Those may be a little older, but I didn't get to play DK but for about a week before my old 98 machine blew up, and I'd (almost) give a nut to get it to run on Vista. Jedi Knight is still some of the most fun I've ever had playing a PC game.

Another vote for UT'99
Another vote for System Shock 2
Lords of the Realm II (1996, but more than good enough to make up the difference)
X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter: Balance of Power
Fallout 2

I've always thought about doing something like this with scrounging together older parts for a retro gaming rig, but never found the time. How much did this set you back, if you don't mind my asking?

Hell yes. Pentium 3 + Voodoo 5 + Tribes = orgasm.

Unfortunately Tribes was best experienced back when the Pentium 3 and Voodoo 5 were the best parts you could buy, because that's when most people were playing, and seeing as how its essentially a multiplayer only game...

I have completely lost touch with how the game was doing but I'm sure there are still a few playing considering the game is now legally free (and essentially always has been 'free' considering its complete lack of piracy protection - no accounts, no CD keys, no CD in drive requirment...)

I'll add tribes to the list then.

I got all of the parts from the FS/FT forum here at Anandtech. The Voodoo 5 was a steal at $13 shipped. It just came yesterday, it looks like it's less than a month old. The rest of the system, 2 x P3 933mhz, Intel OR840 Mobo, 256mb Rambus, 300w PSU, was $75 shipped. I have a case, hard drive and such already.

If you need a racing fix, get NFS: Porsche Unleashed. That game was absolute gold back in the day.

Great list.

Thief Gold and Thief 2 - TMA should be added, along with the 1000 or so Fan Missions (some are full games in themselves, such as T2X).

Also add Clive Barker's Undying.

EDIT >> Can't believe nobody's mentioned RtCW.

Blood II was great on my Voodoo 3 -- the expansion pack was fun too. Phantasm sphere was one of the new weapons.

it's AGP. I never played any of the monkey island games, those were before I was really into gaming. Aren't they before 1998 - 2002?

Monkey Island 4 was from around then. 1 and 2 are super old. 3 is a in-between. They're all worth playing.

the legacy of kain series(blood omen, soulreaver, defiance) was quite nice, especially the story, few games have such a convoluted story

Wing Commander: Prophecy Gold. You need a good space shooter on the list.

Also, it likes Glide.

I played Dreamfall. What an amazing game. I felt like I was playing a character in a really good movie. I never did play the TLJ though... perhaps I should.

Whoa... you are in for such a good time if you have never played the games on that list before. If you like Thief I highly recommend Thief 2, No One Lives Forever 2 as well.

I've played Thief 2 and 3, excellent games. Never played Thief 1 ...does it run on Windows XP?
