If the weather permits it, wear loose weatpants/sweatshirt as the material absorbs some of the impact.

Expect welts no matter what you wear. I had a friend get hit right above the mask, kinda on the crown of his head. It knocked him out for about 10 seconds and he had a 1.5" welt on his forehead. Looked like a horn.

I always just wore a t-shirt and jeans, be comfortable.

Strategies? Don't get hit? ;)

Cheapest paint ins't the best idea, it'll explode in the hopper/feeder/barrel. Try a step up from the absolute lowest end for starters.

Go to the store and buy some paint grenades - don't let anyone know. When you're in deep sh*t, launch them.

Bring a couple of handkerchiefs to wipe the sweat off your mask and face. Remember to never remove the mask while the guns are unplugged. It's not losing an eye over some minor discomfort.

even at 300FPS which is usially the absolute MAX at most fields a paintball wouldent knock you out, unless it was frozen, then its like a marble

but they will leave welts even through clothes - looks liek ringworm

yea, it hurts at first, but you get used to it. They leave welts, bruises so expect that. Don't panic.

and do not -DO NOT- do anything that would make you more comfortable vs being safe. It's insane how many dumb people are willing to take off their masks in paintball :(

I don't get welts when I play with sweatpants and a sweatshirt on, the fields I play at have you set your velocity all the same... it's not bad. I mean if they are frozen, obviously. Even if you get welts, I've never heard of someone growing a "HORN" from a god damn paintball.

What kind of gun was it?

Most places make you buy field paint, so you pay what they charge.
as for strategies, keep your profile small. If you are standing, keep your body sideways to your enemy.

BTW, what type of game they play where your are going? Is it capture the flag, or speedball?

I don't recall what the field allowed (it's been a couple of years) but it was reasonable. We tested just before the fight, and re-tested his gun afterwards, it was kosher. We just figured it hit him just right... I guess they guy *could* have jacked the fun up during the match, but I highly doubt it.

We were playing on a friend's Aunt's place, among family and friends of the family. Only like 8 people were playing, it was before the field opened for business, just a friendly match.

Also, if you are ANYWHERE near where a shot can go (near a field w/o netting) keep it ON. Do NOT remove the mask during play for "fog" in the visor. Call yourself out, get off the field and deal with the equipment issue there.

well yea the baggier the clothing the less impact you take, i used to play in some camo pants and our teams jersey, both pretty thin, left welts most times

Dont wear a cup it limits your movement. If you're skinny and fast, use it... wear less "armor" for more mobility. If you are fat and slow, wear more armor, cuz ur fat a$$ is gettin shot.

i would suggest some neck coverage, cause it hurts like hell when you get hit there.. and i've heard stories of people getting blood clots from getting shot in the neck, then needing surgery or dying from them.. dont' know how real those are though..

oh yah, and cover yoru balls.. i've never been hit there, but just imagine that one....

strategies depend completely on the type of game you're playing.. CTF games are fun, but require lots of players, and a lot more team work.. if you don't have team work, it isn't gonna help.. speedball is fun for smaller games, and can go really quick.. for speedball basically just shoot as many paintballs as you can until you get hit...

and don't go for the chepeast paint (if you have a choice).. as stated, they can break in the barell or the hopper, and cause lots of onfield problems...

also (as stated before) don't take your mask off on the field... not only is it a no-no, it's extremely dangerous.. i always think of that one scene in starship troopers where they were doing their boot camp, and the one dude takes his helmet off during the live ammo training and gets his brains blown out... leave your mask on

i've seen guys get pretty nasty welts and i've been knocked silly from a forehead shot from a foot away, but i wasn't out cold and i didn't get a horn on my head. a big grapefruit sure, but not a horn.

and i've heard stories of people getting blood clots from getting shot in the neck, then needing surgery or dying from them..

i've NEVER heard of this happening and i've been involved with paintball for awhile now. however, getting hit in the neck sucks, as does getting shot in the sack. a properly folded hand towel can work just as good as a cup without limiting movement. neck protection, whatever i guess you can get one of those neoprene things or just tie a bandanna around your neck but it looks goofy.

wear a baseball cap, some loose fitting clothes and you'll be fine.

oh and as others said, DO NOT TAKE OFF YOUR MASK FOR ANY REASON WHILE YOU'RE ON THE FIELD. it's not worth the risk.
