gofundme is so stupid

in the past couple weeks, i have seen dumb gofundme requests from friends, acquaintances and strangers for the following:

- a couple who wants to adopt a baby - 10000$
- a guy who wants to get a masters degree without taking any student loans - 15000$
- a woman who wants to put her kid through college - 40000$

instead of begging for money like a bum, why dont you try saving?

Only time I have ever donated there was for deaths of friends and acquaintaces.

As a joke I wanted to put my 5 year old daughters request of going to china to make friends.

Why not beg? If it works, it works. That's exactly how charity should work; Privately funded, and not run/enforced by government. Instead of worrying about gofundme(which you don't have to participate in), you should be bitching about the redistribution by force your money to first world nuclear powers.

I would like to retire. Would one of you wonderful people here on ATOT set up a page so that I can soon retire? Thanks! 🙂

Um... is there a legal page about who/what/why/when/where you can set up a fundme page? Is it state dependent? Are there tax ramifications?

And doesn't gofundme keep 5%? That's a ridiculously high percentage for what little they do. I had a relative posting a ton of links to gofundme for someone local who had cancer. I must have asked half a dozen times, "since it's local, where can I just make a local donation at, so that some intermediary isn't keeping 1/20th of the money?" I know that local banks have done this many times, allowing people to make deposits to an account in the name of someone needing help - and certainly with nowhere near a 5% fee.

Gofundme does everything. Otherwise, you wouldn't be using them.

I am astounded internet begging has become an acceptable thing.

not only that, most of the people i've seen begging are perfectly capable of affording these costs. they just don't want to.

the guy who wanted help with the college degree just flat out said so. "it is my goal to get a masters degree, but i don't think i should pay for it."

I didn't read his request however I feel that he has been told that he is a special unicorn many times in his life.

Only time I've ever used it was to help pay for family travel expenses for the death of a Soldier in one of my units. I was in Afghanistan at the time and didn't have the option of contributing any other way.
