Godspeed You Black Emperor!

Has anyone hear ever heard of Godspeed You Black Emperor!? I just got one of their CD's and have been dloading stuff. I would recommend that every ATOTer dload at least one GYBE song. If you like radiohead or Sigur Ros then you will probably like them. Their music is about the end of the world and is mainly instumental. It reminded me alot of 9/11.

Anywho, dload a song NOW!

I <3 them. I'm dissapointed, however, with the perversion of 'Hung over as the Queen in Maida Vale' on Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven. I loved the song (from the John Peel Sessions, I'm sure you will be able to find it w/ a filesharing program) in its original form but the m of the song is obscured by other bits and seems cut to pieces on the 2nd disk of LYSFLATH. If you prefer the energy of GYBE! to the more sedate music of ASMZ's first release, you'll like their second (now as The Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra-La-La Band) Born into Trouble as the Sparks Fly Upward.

Oh geeeez!

I read the thread topic and thought:

"This guy is happy to send Jesse Jackson off to the Middle East peace talks"??

😉

<< quit makin fun of Canadian bands, I like BNL!!! >>

Oh, well if you like BNL you should definitely check out GSYBE! 😉

Well, that too. But I was going to leave that to another thread

I need to get Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven. I got F# infinity symbol whatever right now, and a bunch of mp3's. Definitely a good band. Also check out Mogwai. Sigur Ros is good, too, not as dark though.

<< Are they anything like Venom or Celtic Frost? >>

I don't know what they are like. I'll download some songs and check them out though. I can't really summarize GSYBE. It is mainly instrumental, and is very dark. All I can tell you is download some songs like A Silver Mount Zion or East Hastings, turn out all of the lights, lie down, and let dark images of burning cities and the appocalypse dance through your head.

dparker, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who likes this music, didn't know they were Canadian though.

They aren't bad, but I certainly wouldn't compare them with Radiohead. GYBE is much more ambient almost bordering on minimalist type stuff.

🙂

Wow, a thread about intelligent music: GYBE! (Canadian), Sigur Ros (Icelandic) , Radiohead (British), Mercury Rev (American/NY).

Here are some other spacey/quasi-ambient post-rock standards:

The Flaming Lips (American/OK) - The Soft Bulletin
Spiritualized (British) - Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space
Bethany Curve (American/CA) - Skies A Crossed Sky
Mogwai (Scottish) - Young Team

They are a pretty good band. Haven't listened to them in a while, though. A lot of people have checked out the Faming Lips, but most people have never heard the greatest band of all time: the polyphonic spree!!!

I purchased 'Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven' cause a friend had mentioned this band to me.
To tell the truth I am a little dissappointed.
Oh well
