I notice that the only time this godforsaken word "godspeed" is used, is when it some sort of military back-patting or patriotic situation. When else is this word used, and what's the chances that those who use it even know what it means?

I have heard it used when people are consoling another person after a death, or sad situation......

People sometimes use it when seeing someone off on a journey. It's basically wishing someone luck or success.

What's wrong with military backpatting?

As to your question, why do you care?

but then how many people even know what "goodbye" means?
It means "good-bye".... Just like "farewell" means "fare-thee-well". Right?
It's a contraction of "God be with you (ye)"

Title reminded me of Nick Cage as Stanley Goodspeed. That movie rocks. :)

That's what I would have said.
