i just watched them and i dont see why the second godfather is hailed as the more superior film. maybe i'm missing something? any inputs?

yeah i just watched the triology for the first time a few weeks ago, and while the second film is certainly very good, I don't see why it was considered better than the first. In a lot of ways, it doesn't really cover any new territory. You could honestly leave it out and just watch the first and third and still get the whole story. Of course, that would be a shame since it's basically a good movie, but if the story doesn't need telling, why tell it?

The first movie shows the middle of the story. The second one shows the beginning and latter-middle of the story. The third shows the end. I prefer the second film because it shows Vito's determination and how he went from a nobody to one of the most powerful, respected men in the business.
