I have an Ensoniq ASR-X Pro audio workstation with ~20mb RAM, and a 2gb disk and Sony CDU-415 12x CD-ROM drive attached, each in a Sun SCSI enclosure. This setup has had ZERO issues, ever.

So tonight I'm working on yet another promising project and everything is going fine, even did a stopgap save a while back in the session... but now when I attempt to save, I get the following message displayed:

Unknown error
Error code = 102

(A little background on Ensoniq: Sold to E-Mu, which was sold to Creative--yup, the SoundBlaster people. Ensoniq and E-Mu had their pro audio divisions merged and the ASR-X line was effectively orphaned. So there's ZERO information in the public domain on the error codes, unless I can find one of the original hardware engineers to provide details... yeah right... )

Proper bus termination is present, as the disk is at the end of the chain and its Sun enclosure is auto-terminating with LEDs to show status. I've tried resetting the SCSI bus, powercycling the disk enclosure, and reseating all SCSI connections but I doubt that's it, since I can access the disk in other ways (like creating/renaming directories, displaying free space, "optimizing" the disk, etc). I also have tried saving to a different location (a subdirectory, or a separate newly created root-level directory) to no avail. I have NOT attempted to save to floppy since I don't have any handy. I also haven't reset the ASR since my intent was to save my work, not blow it all away. And of course, I'll be even more pissed if I reboot and it DOESN'T solve the problem... not trying to pour money into an orphaned platform, even if it IS my absolute favorite (much more intuitive to me than an MPC)...

I could take a notepad and start writing down a shitload of sample/pad/track/filter parameters, then reboot the ASR and try to manually get back to exactly where I am now by comparing my current notes with the last saved state, but I'm trying to defer that eventuality as long as possible.

So I guess tonight the ASR burns the midnight oil, and stays powered on (wouldn't be the first time; one time I fully fleshed out a concept for a few hours before realizing I lent someone my SCSI cable). I'll be damned if I lose a single nuance of this masterpiece-to-be... :)

This is basically a rant, but if anyone has any relevant ASR experience then any insight would be appreciated...

Shit. The rant continues.

Just brought home a stack of floppies and I get the same unknown error "102" when trying to save on them too. This will most certainly require a reboot at the very least, and a new ASR at worst. :disgust:

Time to break out the notepad and start writing parameters down for the manual restore... :|
