be thankful that you're not on call 24x7x365 :(

then it doesn't matter if it's 5 mins b4 u leave, 5 mins after u leave, or an hour after u leave, u'd still have to drive your ass up there and put out the fires!

:)

Be thankful you know enough to be employable. :D Be positive, smile and say I'd love to help you five minutes before I go even if it takes all night, and you won't get those kinds of calls. Life is sending you the sandpaper you need for your rough edges. Well it could be. :D

Took me 20 minutes, but I got it solved. :)

Basically it was a guy who had been bounced between us (Qwest DSL Tech Support) & his ISP. His download speeds were great, his uploads were half what they should be & were timing out constantly. Customer is in bridging mode, line quality is great, no CRC's or RS corrected/uncorrected errors. Kick-ass connection, in other words, but his uploads suck. We say it's his ISP, his ISP says it's him. One of our techs tried to refer him to his ISP, he requested a supervisor.

Solution:

Customer has static IPs. Had him give me has static IP, & his default gateway on his ISP. Ping his IP from my gateway, which is sitting on top of a T1. Got pings in the 170 ms range, all within a few ms of each other. There's no way in HELL his pings should be that high, considering he's on 640/272 DSL & I'm on a T1. OK, ping his gateway. Whadda ya know, pings ranging from 70 ms all the way to 240 ms! 240 ms from my gateway to his. I know damn well my gateway's fine, the problem's gotta be at his ISP's gateway. Gave him the info, explained it step by step from him to the 'net & from me to him. It all made perfect sense, he thanked me for my time & assistance & we went on our merry ways.

Total time? 20 minutes.

Piece of cake.

And the really funny thing? How was his ISP testing his connection? By pinging him! They got good ping times, so they sent him to us. Umm... Let me see here... Who runs the connection between him & his ISP? None other than Qwest DSL.

Viper, your with Qwest DSL?

I have Qwest DSL too. My pings are fine, I have www.mt.net in Helena Montana as my ISP.

My DSL is the 256K package, not the select.

I know how you guys just upped the max speed on my downloads to 640. I am currently 512/272.

Well I am having trouble getting the 640K. I can connect at 512/272 at txpower 6 and remote txpower 6, and also at any other power settings. My line quality is 38-42. Once or twice I have gotten it at 640 when I retrain, but line quality is shown as 17, and I have horrible packet loss. I used to be able to connect at 640 but that was before we replaced my lines outside because they were causing errors, and the connection would drop. Once we repaired to higher quality lines, it wouldn't connect at 640 any longer (I connected at 640 when I first got it months ago).

Does this sound as though I have lines that just won't take the 640 well, or is it something else?

Go with the txpower that results in the best line quality, & then live with whatever connection speed you get with that. Most people should be able to get 640K, but it's certainly not guaranteed.

One thing to try would be to unplug every phone in your house, & make sure you're on a short phone line (<=10 ft, ideally) to the wall jack. If you can train up at 640K reliably then, start adding things back one by one until you find what's causing your problem. You could have a bad (or reversed) filter somewhere that's causing the problem.

Good luck.

Thank you. Okay, that will be my project for tomorrow.

Also, what are these options:

Set Reed Solomon interleave depths
Set margin
Set remote margin
Cell Scrambling

They are in options for set int wan0.

I can't justify calling up Qwest and asking this, since I am 95% sure it has nothing to do with anything I should worry about.

When all else fails, I buy you a case of beer, and have you un cap my line. Just kidding of course. But it would be nice to have it uncapped to see exactly how fast my line could really go. Although if I can't do 640 even...

You're right, you can't call Qwest for that. Nobody would have any clue WTF you were talking about. Including me. ;) We never deal with those options, set int wan0 txpower X is about as far as we go with the set int wan0 stuff.

As far as me uncapping your line, no can do. That would require a physical setting at your local CO, and there's no way in hell I'm going to Montana for you.

Reed Solomon is an anti-jam encoding method. I'm guessing that those options are for adjusting the signal if you're working with a noisy line or somesuch.
