So I been looking around for a ssl certificate for this website im building. My host recommended me a company that like charges $160 per year for a ssl certificate.... This was a little expensive because I dont think the website it self will generate that much... so it will be taking a loss. Then I came across godaddy turbo ssl which I think was $29.99 or something... but today I checked it and they are running a special for $19.99... The question is... if an ssl is this cheap, and other companys are charging in the 100 range, is this ssl certificare any good? any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Godaddy's certificate might not be part of the default top level Certificate Authorities registered in web browsers. So then the visitor will be prompted to accept the certificate before the ssl connection will be established.

Try Thawte - their certs tend to be a little more cost effective.

an ssl certificate is an ssl certificate is an ssl certificate. However, popular browsers such as IE and FF come prepackaged with mainstream certs such as VeriSign and Thawte. If you go with a lower cost solution, the visitors to your site may be required to install the certificate.

awesome, thanks for the heads up guys!

Oh by the way, so how bad is it to install the certificate? Is it very annoying, time consuming, etc?

Ask your host - most of the time they'll do it for you.

Naw, my host (dreamhost) wont do it... they refer me to this one site... but they charge $160 which is super expensive...

Well... as for just installation, I've not done it before 🙁, but I'm told that it's pretty easy to do... do you use cPanel for your website management? (I'm not familiar with what Dreamhost uses)

yea, i think its cpanel.

In that case, just search the web for installing SSL certificates via cPanel. 😛

I've never done it, but cPanel makes just about everything super-easy... I would assuming that installing an SSL cert would be the same. 😉
