Is it secure, easy to use, does it mean that Godaddy has control of your domain rather than you?

private just means your personal info won't be displayed on a whois listing. registration thru them means you own it no matter what.

You can get screwed doing that. Not worth it, IMO.

I've used the private registration, and it works well. Basically a third-party is listed as the contact, and they serve as the go-between. When you request a DNS change, for instance, you get an e-mail from the agency notifying you and asking you to confirm the change.

I have the same question....should i use private or public domain registration?
I don't really care about the dollar or two extra for the service....mostly i'm curious about the implications. Also, I don't want to make up contact info...just as a personal preference.
So do spammers actually get and use your info off of whois? Or is that just hype by the proxy domain?
It seems as though most people here have done tons of public registrations without any problems and it doesn't sound like people are jumping on the private registration bandwagon.
In theory I would prefer to have my information be private....but, and i realize this is a big what if, what if the proxy domain goes belly up - then what happens to my registration? I might want to have this domain registered for years and years and years - I'd rather not have to worry about this. This just made me think of another question, how easy is it to change your registration information? Is it set in stone? What do you do if your info changes?

Could someone who knows more about this enlighten me?

Thanks.

The email is the only info you put in for real. That's the only way they ever contact you anyway. Everything else can be horse manure.

First, if you don't mind the extra few bucks, go for it. Spammers don't really get it off whois since your email isn't in text format, but an image... they can't write scripts to pull them (not as easy anyway). example (scroll down and you'll see the image)Don't worry about godaddy going down... they've been solid for years... register for as long as you want. Changing the registration info is as easy as logging into your account and updating from there. There's no reason not to go private except money.

EDIT>>> Guess I've been sheltered from other WHOIS sources... for example, network solutions' WHOIS has your email in text. :| WTF is up with that ??? Get with the times.

Yes spammers (email AND snail mail) do get your info via WHOIS.

If you don't want spam or your info out there I'd recommend paying the extra $ for the privacy option.
