But atheism isn't a religion, and doesn't need converts. There's nothing to follow...

If they don't need converts, why do they need advertising? If there is nothing to follow, why are they having a convention?

Atheists teach atheism.
Atheists pay to advertise atheism.
Atheists have conventions to discuss the merits of atheism, and how to spread the atheist view.
I'd be willing to bet that there is a non profit atheist group that doesn't pay taxes.

This all sounds very familiar to me.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...

Atheism is not a religion.

Therefore, atheism can be banned without running afoul of the first amendment!

:whiste:

So now you're saying not having a religious affiliation throws your rights to free speech out the window ?

I was trying to be just a little coy.

I think its obvious that atheists don't simply "lack belief", as I "lack belief" in Zeus, yet I don't hold a-Zeusist conventions or pay for advertising space.

They're are undoubtedly activists, and in a country in which the overwhelming majority of people are religious, its practically impossible to just simply lack belief.

Really? I "simply lack belief". Grew up in a somewhat religious family as well. Haven't believed in any supernatural beings since i was around 10. I still miss Santa Claus.

Yawn...the same old tired "if it looks like, walks like, etc., it must be a..." argument.

Let's see:

Stamp collectors teach and promote stamp collecting.
Stamp collectors advertise stamp collecting.
Stamp collectors have conventions to discuss the merits of stamp collecting and how to spread the popularity of stamp collecting.

Stamp collecting is a religion!

This is fun.

Considering the number of believers is decreasing and the number of atheists/agnostics is increasing I'd say it is indeed possible.

Wasn't there a rule in this forum against incorrect thread titles? No where in the article did it say God wanted them censored.

God confided this to me directly. I am an ordained minister, the graduate of a 2 and 1/2 year program (true fact.)

Always liked the services at the Church of What's Happening Now.

We call them cervixes. We're gyno-feminist oriented. :p

In other news, I always did LOVE the old bumper sticker: God is coming, and boy, is she pissed.

Still available!

So your position is that atheism is a hobby. I have to admit that I've never considered that possibility. That leads to several questions though. What does a hobbyist atheist do? Are there collectibles or a game thats played? Perhaps there is memorabilia from the great atheists throughout history to be collected? I honestly don't see how this works.

I saw welder (scraggly biker type) on a job site* about 20 or so years ago that was wearing a T-Shirt that had Jesus is Coming on the front and And boy is he pissed! on the back. You wouldn't believe the looks on the people's faces after he passed.

* The job site was at a power house on a university campus in North Carolina

I wonder if those that complain about these billboards defended the anti-Islam billboards that one group was trying to put up in the NYC transit system...

Granted, some of the billboards are over the top and unnecessarily antagonistic, most of those shown in the OP are rather benign, so I don't see how they could 'violate community standards' that the advertising company claimed in their denial of those ads.

They aren't converting as much as educating people.. there is a big difference. That is like saying scientists are trying to convert people to science..lol

That makes perfect sense to me, but kind of throws the stamp collecting analogy out the window. It does however bring up other questions. Why atheism? Why not the big bang, or string theory? Why aren't there billboards proclaiming the benefits of the higgs boson? Why are there no anti astrology organizations?

I know the answer to all of those questions as well as you do, and they always come back to where you put your faith.
I'm not a religious man, but I'm also not nearly arrogant enough to assume that I know the unknowable. Any discussion of a supreme being is by definition outside the realm of human knowledge. Taking the written word of religion and applying an obtuse or literal meaning to it to make it appear foolish is intellectual dishonesty. It's done only to make the non believer feel superior, and that is the essence of my personal issue with atheism.
