This would be the third time this has happened to me in 3 years. First bike was stolen in 3 days, but that's because I didn't know better and got a crappy cable lock. Second bike, stolen after 3 months I think, and that's also because I used a crappy U-lock, which was sawn off. Fine.

Now to the third one, it's a old 2000 Trek 820, but it's reliable as hell and I have spent quite a bit to upgrade the parts. And I managed to keep it safe for the past 2 years, and now it's gone.

The bike frame is secured nicely on a bike rack with a Kryptonite Evolution 2000 U-lock, the wheels and the seat post is secured using these quick release locks.

I have no idea how the thief did it because there's no trace of a broken lock anywhere,
and the bike rack looks fine. And the crappiest part of this whole affair, I just put on a pair of new $16 grips on it yesterday, and I just ordered some replacement parts a few days ago :|:roll:

The only explanation is, I might have not secured it at all, or improperly secured it accidentally, and the fvcking thief just carried it away. I don't know how are they going to manage to lose the quick release locks though.

So yeah. Thanks for reading the rant. I'm just so livid right now that it's giving me knots in my stomach :|:|:|

Bummer. I use a heavy duty cable lock that even bolt cutters won't work on. But I rarely ride my bike to town although with the price of gas what it is I thought I might start.

You should try the Kryptonite New York CHAIN lock. I have one, and my bike hasn't been stolen yet. It's heavy as hell, but i just carry it across by chest when i ride.

Nope. I already did an exchange with Kryptonite for the newer version which doesn't use tubular keys.

Is there a bolt cutter strong enough to chomp that lock off? I think it might be easier to snip the bike rack but as I said, I don't see anything wrong with the rack

You should get a lock with hardened steel. You won't be able to saw through it with a saw, and if you get a thick one you won't be able to use bolt cutters on it. I'll pull the docs on my lock tomorrow, but you'd probably need the jaws of life to cut through it heh. Plus it comes with a warranty for theft that covers the lock and the bike up to 5k I think.

(When I'm out and around on my bike and I'm not on it, BRUTUS IS chained to it.

I haven't lost a bike in some time...
