Rant #1. ------- So I thought I remembered dragging/dropping in iTunes w/ my wife Nano. Try it w/ my new iPod Touch and............no joy. If I try to "sync" it, it won't just sync the stuff I have checkmarked. It just starts syncing EVERYTHING.

iTunes = so freaking illogical I want to submit Steve Jobs to a tapout.

Rant #2. ------ So after first learning that handbrake will indeed NOT rip DVD's on its own, I finally spent the extra hour & ripped "The Matrix" w/ Decrypter last night. Then I put handbrake to work w/ all DEFAULT settings (as per Macrumors.com). Then I try to sync the movie in iTunes.

"Matrix not copied to iPod because it cannot be played on this iPod".

WTF????????

1: In the iPod section of iTunes (that thing that comes up when you plug in your iPod) you simply check "Manually Sync" or "Sync only Content that is checked". By default it will try to copy everything, but you can stop it, and then re-sync it with what you want.

2: What do you mean that handbrake will not rip DVDs on its own? You drop in the DVD, you set it to the iPod Touch/iPhone preset (over on the right side of the screen) and then you press start... easy peasy.

1. you can't manually manage the music on the Touch/iPhone (yet, I hope). I have a playlist called iPhone which syncs the subset of music I want to listen to.

2. I use VisualHub to convert AVI to iPhone compatible format, it even put it into iTunes for you. And you can convert a whole list of videos at once too. Never had to rip a DVD to Mac, so cant help there.

#1.) Thanks, I'll have to look for the "Sync only content that is checked" 'cuz otherwise, no workeee!

#2.) It just don't work. Supposedly it still works on Macs, but on PC's........no joy!! Maybe you have an older version of handbrake that'll still break the DVD, but otherwise.........no workeeeee!! It will only do previously ripped (i.e. decrypted) DVD's these days.

Handbrake is a bit misleading in their description IMO. It states it can rip decrypted dvds or those encrypted with something other than CSS. The problem is... most everything is CSS (altho, not sure about newer stuff, haven't kept up). And it's rare to hit up a decrypted dvd, or at least it used to be...

Yeah, you have to rip first. It doesn't have the MTR integration like it does in the Mac OS, so you rip with decrypter and then use HB or use AnyDVD to make the discs readable to HB.

Best news now is.........

Now that I've already ripped The Matrix, and spent another 7 hours converting it in handbrake..................

NOW I GET TO CONVERT IT YET AGAIN!!!

5 hours and counting in iTunes (right-click on the movie and select "convert to iPhone/iPod 'cuz it won't sync into the ipod). I figure it oughtta be done converting & I might finally get this movie loaded on my new iPod Touch in by about Tuesday or Wednesday!!!

Are we having fun yet???

Ah, i hadn't realized that you were on Windows... no wonder Handbrake didn't work for you (seriously, the only movies that it can't handle on OS X are newer Sony made ones)

RipIt4Me to tag the encryption, DVDDecrypter (or DVD Shrink) to extract the ISO/VOB (whichever you prefer) and then... VisualHub or Handbrake to rip it to an iPhone/Touch friendly format.

Much more work than on OS X (not trying to rub it in... sorry if it comes off that way) Handbrake to iPhone/Touch

Wow I never realized it would be such a bitch to convert movies in windows for the touch. Drag and drop with presets with handbrake and visualdub make it such a snap on os x...

I haven't messed with movies on my iphone yet, but the fact that you can't manually manage the music is pretty damned annoying.

There are presets in HB for this in Windows and it works fine after you rip the DVD. He has to be doing something wrong.

Turns out I was doing a little wrong...........but hopefully I can help somebody else out here........

#1.) hit the "Show Presets" button at the top right of the handbrake program. THEN.....

#2.) Be sure to drag the HB window over to the left 'cuz unless you're using a high-res or widescreen, it'll pop the presets right out of your view!!!!

#3.) Select "iPod/iPhone" preset. Then, look over all the tabs at the bottom & in the video tab, tick "2nd pass" box for best video. (I'm testing the low-res preset w/ audio modified to 128mb and single-pass video to see if it's tolerable)

#4.) You can't drag/drop to your iPod from an XP/Vista window, so drag/drop from your XP/Vista window into iTunes......THEN.......you'll have to click back on your iPod again, hit the video tab, select the movie (if you're manually managing your music like I do) and then hit either "Sync" or "Apply" (itunes gives you one or the other depending on its mood)....LOL!!!

It may just be that I'm too Windows oriented in my brain, but iTunes just doesn't make a whole lotta sense to me. There's the directories on the left, then the main window tabs, the ability to drag/drop sometimes, but not all the time, etc. Changing options within the program in different places, etc.

I'd love just a plain old window where I could cut/paste whatever I want into wherever I want. Just like my usb thumbdrive.

Oh well..............hope that helps somebody.
