What are the procedural rules?
Who is then chosen to run for the party?

The political parties should have rules in place for this.

This happened in Missouri with Mel Carnahan and in Minnesota with Paul Wellstone. In both situations, the party elites used state rules to field a replacement, either "vote for the dead candidate" with the understanding that his wife would get the seat, or the leaders picked a new person (Mondale).

Kind of scary scenario but it seems as the Dems are fielding a couple of potential bullet catchers so this is a relevant question.

For the Federal, I would suspect that the VP elect would take over.

that's what I'd think, unless it was like a really close primary.

If before the convention, see Chicago, 1968. Robert Kennedy was assassinated after securing the nomination, before the convention. An open convention nominated Hubert H. Humphrey. If after the convention, the party's national committee would have to decide who then became the nominee. I doubt either party would automatically give the nomination to the VP candidate, since the VP is often selected to avoid overshadowing the presidential nominee. Could you see the Republicans in 1988 turning to Dan Quayle for the general election?
