God fearing best friend told me to stop saying "Jesus Christ!"

My best friend is a trip. He is afraid of God so he will not say "g*ddamn or Jesus Christ." That's his prerogative. The other day he was over and we saw something wild on TV. I said "Jesus Christ, did you see that?" He snapped at me "stop saying that! I'm tired of you using his name that way!" Whoa Nellie!

Out of respect for his beliefs I didn't say anything. I know how he is. After thinking about it it kind of pisses me off. Why can't he respect the fact that I don't have the same beliefs as he does and that what I say is just that, it's what I say. It won't affect him. God won't punish him for what I say.

I hate people trying to impose their beliefs on others.

This could have been an excellent discussion but, as usual, it gets crapped all over by jokers who likely will never grow up.

bah Jesus was just some crackpot. I believe in God, but not that jesus was his son. As for your friend, tell him you understand he does not believe in using 'Jesus Christ' in any sort of exclaimation, but explain to him that you don't share his beliefs and will continue to use it however you please.

i agree with you guys. i would have told him to fck off. but that is how i am. you don't like it, and you can't handle it, then i guess we aren't as good of friends as we thought. cause that is the way i am. they only time i don't swear is when i am around kids or most of the time the elderly. basic respect for the public i guess.

His loving religion doesn't allow him to do that. He was taught all people of differing faiths and religions are going to hell. christianity is awesome, isn't it? :disgust: Too bad most of the christians I unfortunately had to face convienantly ignore the good aspects of christianity (thou shall not judge, thou shall love your neighbors, etc) and take up stupid parts ("thou shall burn faggots, witches, and other pagans").

I'm an agnostic: condemn me! Oi! Oi!

You can say whatever you damn well please. If he doesn't want to say it, fine. That's HIS choice, not yours.

Dude, he's not trying to impose any beliefs on you. He's probably just offended by it. My friends make jokes about killing babies, but if I say something in disgust or ask them not to say such things, Im nottrying to impose my morals on them.

Fine, you tell him you'll agree if he'll agree to never mention religion or pray in your presence.

Instead of saying "god damn it" start saying "praise satan!" and see if he likes that better.

You whining about your friend "imposing his beliefs" on you is the most offensive thing I see in this thread.

Oh, substitute offensive with annoying and/or lame.

If this is such a big deal for you, maybe you should find a new best friend...

I would compare this to yelling out the 'n' word. Some people will be offended, and wish you didn't say such things.

I think that, perhaps, "thou shalt not use God's name in vain" meant something quite different when it was written. I don't think Jews were using it as a curse.

Personally, I wince a little when it is said. Never had the courage to say anything about it though.

Tell you friend that you don't fear God, and you can say whatever you please. See what he says to that.

i completely agree -

it's all in how the word is used. if it's some buddies calling each other "great person", nobody cares, nobody is offended. if they use it to truly insult somebody, then it turns ugly.

same thing with god. when people say god damn, it's just a habit of speech... there is no animosity meant towards god.

Very sad... That is a very little thing your friend has asked you to do.

that's a simple and dumb thing to say. how many of us really have a best friend? how many best friends do we have? best friends are hard to come by, i think.

i have known him for 25 years. i'm not just going to go find a new best friend because of one disagreement.

i agree in principal. that is why when i wrote my first message on the subject i said i didn't anything to him out of respect. i respect that he is offended by it so i didn't say it again. it's the same respect i grant to children and elderly people.

i guess since he only said it to me once he has actually not said anything to me about it all the other times i have used that phrase. i guess you can say he didn't say anything to me out out of respect for me.

i think i have it figured out now.

He's your "best friend"?
If so, why not respect his opinion and tell him you'll try and watch yourself around him?

If he's so afraid of God, maybe you could encourage him to talk to someone about his fear :)

There was a great running joke in Orgazmo (which has a devout Mormon as a pornstar superhero):

other person: "Jesus Christ!"
Mormon guy: "Where?"

Oh, and "God damn" is not attacking god, it's asking him to send someone to hell for you, as in "god damn Fox for canceling Futurama!"

The tolerance in this thread is overwhelming.

Dude, you don't get it. Go to Japan and tell a stranger you want her father to rape this guys daughter because you don't like him, and see how it goes. I bet they would understand that perfectly that you have no intention of disrespect.

If your not a Christian, it's about RESPECT and INTEGRITY. If you lack these things, then say whatever floats your boat. It's a free country, you can be an a-hole as much as you like.

thats a rather selfish and egocentric statement. you want him to respect your lack of belief in God but you dont want to respect his belief in God and refrain from saying "Jesus Christ"? because its a free country and youre allowed to say whatever you want, hes also allowed to express his displeasure with what you say.

if hes a christian, then he probably believes that Jesus is the best thing that ever happened to him and the rest of the world. when you hear someone saying something derogatory about something you believe is the best thing to ever happen to you, then it tends to offend. if hes your best friend, then it shouldnt be a big deal to cut one phrase out of your vocabulary when youre around him.
