You only live once. Yeah, the 1900 will hand the 1800 its ass on a platter. But you know what, a month or two down the road something else will hand the 1900 its own butt.

If you pulled the trigger on an xt1800, keep it. It'll be enough for several years. There's always something better around the corner.

And just because the cards are going to be announced end of Jan doesn't mean you'll be able to buy one any time soon. Never mind buy it for $489.

Don't bother with a $209 + shipping midrange card. Enjoy the top end, it won't lose that much more than the cost of the mid/low end card.

I say cancel the order and get a low priced card. The x1800 was supposed to be released 6 months ago, and in relation to the upcoming r580 launch, it's way overpriced at this point in time. Just get a cheap but decent pci-e card like a x800gto or a 6600gt - that way you can still play games while you wait and in a month or 2 you can still sell it for a decent price. Actually, i'd get the 6600gt if you can find it cheap, maybe even used, because until Nv releases the 7600 series or the 7200 cards, the 6600gt is their only low-midrange card and it wont become obsolete until those cards are released. I'm thinking the r580 will be launched before the 7600 series, so you'd still be able to recover most of the money you spent on the 6600gt.

i'll bet ati's $400 price point card (x1900xl? whatever happened to the pro designation?) beats the x1800xt come january.
i'll bet nvidia's $400 price point card (7900gt?) beats the x1800xt come january. or february.

The R520's won't be completely wiped will they? Once the R580 shows up it's not like they'll discontinue the R520's...

everyone thinks they will discontinue the R520s.

Seriously, just keep the X1800... skip the r480. Your X1800XT will still last a couple years. It could be months yet till it actually ships. I myself just spent 520 on an XFX 7800GTX OC, it's their highest clocked card, a true beast. I'll be able to play CoD2 on my 20inch LCD *now* and that's what it's all about, gaming. Screw the next product cycle. 😛

christ now i have this huge decision to make literally tomorrow, and i have a terrible feeling that your all right, adn that the 1900 will dominate the 1800. but i really dont wanna cancle my order and get a ****** card.

then keep it.

i think its clear that most people think the 1900 will in fact dominate the 1800xt. i do.

it comes down to what a months worth of gaming pleasure is worth to you.

i'm sure you'll still be able to ebay the 1800xt for decent bank shortly after the 1900 comes out.

But don't you think he will have a bit of trouble unloading it if the next gen is out and trounces the X1800XT? He is going to take a beating on the sell price.

OP: I would cancel it and buy a 40.00 PCI-e card to tide you over. Sacrifice a month to reap a better graphics card. Cancel that XT man. Like yesterday.

Good advice

Especially about getting a used 6600GT. If I were the OP my only big concern w/b at what price will we see these new cards. However, thats gonna be offset by the realization that the x1800 is gonna be cheaper after the x1900 line comes out. So if the x1900 is way too high, go back the origianl plan and get a x1800. Wait a month and profit, one way or the other.

BTW: It coulda been worse. You coulda just upgraded to a NF3 w/an agp slot instead of getting in on PCIe

wait 2 months and get a 7900 😛 nah, you should atleast cancel and wait it out a little bit. at the very least, the 1900 will be as good as the 1800. price wont differ that much either probably. just find a PCI card and go do stuff for a month. if they turn out to be less than expected, and the 7900 is still too far away, then you can go buy a 1800xt or something. but at the very least wait for the benchies.

Nope. He wanted to know if he should cancel his 1800xl order, and wait, or buy a low-end card for a month...
