God damn I'm out of shape

so i'm developing a but of a beer belly. I'm not fat (5'11, 165 last time I checked). So my buddy who is a health nut told me to cut back a tad on the fast food (which I started to do) and to run for 30 minutes a day every other day.

Well, I tried to run today. I couldnt go more than 7 minutes without stopping to walk. So all in all, I ran 20 minutes, walked 10. Now I feel like crap. thighs hurt, hammies are sore, and I feel noxious (sp?)

so what can I do to over come these physical side effects of exercising?

Keep doing it.

I started an adult hockey leage about 2 months ago. The first game I was so exhausted I couldnt believe it, then the day after I thought ever muscle in my body was cramping up. Now after two months, I hardly get winded out there and the next day I feel great. Being active is funny like that :p

just started back trying to look after myself, walked 1/2 hour each day for the last 3 days and this evening used light weights to do some upper body work.

I figure baby steps to help me warm up and be sure I've got good form. go slow, try to enjoy the feeling.Today I actually was kind of looking forward to my walk after work:)

I highly doubt that if you are in bad shape and overweight you can run 4 miles easily..

i havent worked out since 10 grade, which was 6 years ago. Once a week I play half court basketball but I move around the court very little and play low post most of the time.

not at all, particularly if you were at your max intensity when you stopped running and slowed down to a walk pace.

I'm trying to decide on an exercise that I REALLY enjoy doing, purely as fun.I need to lift a bit for bone health but I don't really enjoy it.I'm thinking if I can find a cardio healthy activity that I really like that it can serve as a reward for lifting:)

Yeah, you're both definitely doing the right thing. It's perfectly fine, OP, to stop to walk a little bit if you HAVE to, but always keep moving to try to keep your heart rate up a bit. When you can start running 30 minutes without stopping, maybe trying running for longer or picking up the pace. If you have any questions about some stuff, just PM me :) I like helpin' people out with this kind of stuff.

Eh, my dad ran about 50 marathons and a lousy 1/4 mile kills me. I'm as out of shape as they come. Well almost. I'm not fat. Just no endurance. I bought a treadmill two weeks ago, and I'm still trying to get into a routine. If I walk, I can go 30 minutes on a 7.5 degree incline at 3.3 mph, and that's about it. But the first day I had the thing, 20 minutes killed me at 7.0 degrees so I guess I"m improving.

You'd need to be eating pie and drinking beer to negate it. Eventually you'll get up to a full 30min run, just keep at it.

The walking breaks are fine at this point.

I would have prolly suggested 20 min to start out.

Warm down/ stretch out afterwards (work the lactic acid out of your muscles) will help with the pain.

You're burning calories either way, so probably not :) Now if you're stopping and walking into the local bar, that's a different story.

I've ran for a long time. First off, even though a lot of times you just want to 'get out and go' always, always, always stretch before and after your run. Further, if you are in that much pain, you are running too fast. Slow down. Also, the 30 minutes thing, if you haven't run in a long time, is way too long. Try starting at a mileage, not a time.

It gets better quickly if you can push through the pain. Remember that as you're hurting you're pushing through pain that most people stop at. That's why they're unfit and soon you will not be. It's a great feeling putting down many miles at a faster pace than most people can even do one.

One summer, I decided that I wantd to be able to run a mile without stopping. I spent 3 months exercising and still couldn't do it. I could do 3/4 mile no problem. I pretty much decided that it was because ofmy build and my life long issues with cardio.

I don't know about that advice...I've heard that the "no pain, no gain" mentality can get you injured pretty quick. Walking is just as beneficial as running, as far as I know.
