dammit.

I CAN'T DO PROOFS TO SAVE MY LIFE.

advanced calc, and we're not even doing the hard stuff yet ;-)

I CAN'T DO PROOFS TO SAVE MY LIFE.

Have a nice weekend people =)

wait till you get to calc 3 and have to do triple integrals or convert to spherical coordinates :)

Dude just wait til Differential Equations. I studied 3 hours last night for my test and I still have no clue what the hell I am doing. Maybe this math minor was a BAD idea.......

Calculus 3? Bah. Differiential equations? Easy stuff. Discrete math/Higher alegbra? Be afraid, be very afraid. All proofs all the time.

By the way, check out claymath.org for some interesting problems. These problems are similar to the ones I'm working on now for my math class, but are much much harder. Then come back and complain about calculus or diffEQ.

oooh calculus, pff whatever. I spent a total of 8hours yesterday on ONE problem for my elements of mechanical design class. And no it wasn't just because I was slow. :)

That's the thing about technical subjects; if you ever get behind, it takes forever to catch up. Slowly but surely you will improve and have better intuition in solving problems. Only advice I can give is to work on this 1st and decide that you will work on it as long as necessary to understand it. Then some time later you will notice that the time required is much less than before. Find a partner -- maybe a good looking one that YOU NEED TO IMPRESS!

Ya,

My second Bachelors degree in math... i finished it with whopping 2.4 whoohoo!

<rant>

Soo much work, soo little time.

I loved the exams (much sarcasm there). Classes were usually an hour and 15 minutes, and we would walk in class and there would be 2 equations on the board. Pick one, complete by the time class was over. You'd be given four sheets of blank paper to do the proofing. And yes, you normally used every second of the period to finish it...

People wonder why I say I will never go back to school again... but they were usually like psychology majors or something. They didn't have to *suffer* to get their degree the way technical majors did.

BTW: Be very afraid of any class that the first word is 'Abstract...' IE, Abstract Algebra, Abstract Geometry, etc. You will get writer's cramp finishing one single problem!

I don't know about you but everyone but when I have someone to impress for some reason my genius gene turns on.. or is it she turns my genius gene on.. same difference :).. yea all math is just about practice. experience with problems is how you will know about the tricks to do differnt problems.. all problems are related take one step at a time.

I found calculus easy compared to Discrete Math and Linear Algebra... I have yet to do Calculus 3 though. I am still debating wether to get that math minor.

are you people stupid or something. do y'all know what advanced calc is?

Okay, i am in my SECOND year of college.

I took AP calc BC (= calc 1 and calc 2, before they took away delta and epsilon, also did infinite [taylor, maclaurin] series) in junior year of high school. Freshman year, i took Calc3, linear Algebra, and discrete math; the last 2 during spring. over the summer, until july, i took ODE, ordinary differential equations (as opposed to partial).

NOW, i am taking ADVANCED calculus, which is a step above calc3, and abstract algebra, which is MATH.

losers...

---

anyway, integration is so easy. triple integrals are simple. orthogonality and all that vector calculus is easy (normal lines and planes, and all that crap)...

conversion to spherical IS NOT HARD!!! cosines!!!

---

NOTE, i have yet to study for anything, i just do the HW. barely read the books.

let's see, my math major so far is going on strong with a 3.9 (that's all the math classes)... and i got a 5 on the BC...

yeah, i am SO CLOSE to finishing my major... ;-) technically, since i am doing math AND comp sci (and engineering) i'll finish the math requirement for the major next semester...

=P

/me stands back and whips out his....

transcript,
yeah 4.0 baby, eat it right there, want some ketchup for that? Third year engineering student. This plus working ~13hours a week for an automation company. :) One bit of arrogance deserves another right? hehe

I agree with Capn. Steel Design HW takes me about 4-5 hours a night @ 3 times a week. Thats not including HW in my other 4 classes. I am a Senior Civil Engineering student, Mississippi State University.

Capn: My roommate is a senior in Mechanical Engineering, so I know what you mean. He spent about 20 hours last week on just one HW project (a design class)

it all depends on what your forte is
i took calc2 in my junior year in high school and diff eq in my senior year. It's all a breeze
but give me english crap and im toast. Love reading, hate writing about it :)

Comes out of the chared remains for Mday's flames ;)

Now it looks like I won't pursue that minor in math now... not if it will turn me into Mday :p j/k

well, the title was also a "joke"

or did you not get it... =( don't worry, you'll get used to my remarks ;-)

i had well over 10 problems.

and 3 hours is NOTHING when doing 10 problems... if those problems are worth doing. some just are not. ;-)

i took multivariable calc and ode senior year hs too, but not stupid enough to take the exam to get placed out of 2 math courses that counts as my major since if i take it a second time, i'd get high grades...

--

that 3.9 can be blamed on one A-. And includes 2 4.0s. Yeah, only 3 classes in that average.

--

capn, arrogance never hurts =D

I spend most of my time doing jack sh!t. let alone any real studying.

i am in a 5 year BS\BE program, and "scheduling" means i am only taking the first engineering course NOW... and it's mechanics of solids and materials... it's vectors and forces over again... and i just do the homework.

It amazes me that the great mathmeticians (sp?) of this world actually enjoyed this stuff and would spend years on a problem because they enjoyed it! Sort of makes you sick doesn't it? I do love the challenge of math, but I hate the aspect of being graded on it. I sort of get into the routine of' know enough to do well but not really learn in unless I have to use it in any applied applications.

mucman, that's part of the reason why i have not enjoyed math as much since the days of calculus... as in up to multivariate... i enjoyed differential equations very much =)

another reason is that WE ARE GOING SO SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW... i'd rather be the moron of any class than be somewhere in the middle...

Mday: I would assume that it is the same type of class that I was required to take 2 years ago as part of a civil engineering degree. Mechanics of Materials is what it was called at MSU and it covered these topics:

1) Basic statics and equilibrium problems
2) Shear/Moment diagrams for beams
3) Moments of Inertia, radius of gyration, mass sold properties, etc.

Is this the class you are taking?

yep blue... easy as sh!t.

the course is required as part of the engineering program, my aim is electrical, though it still says computer on my thingee, transcript.
